There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Gibbon Taxonomy and Scientific Literature on Every Species

Gibbons are a group of small ape species that form the taxonomic family, Hylobatidae. They are apes meaning they are in the same Superfamily as Chimpanzees and Gorillas. Gibbons are only found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia and Southern China. Indonesia has the highest number of endemic Hylobatid (gibbon) species.

The Hylobatidae family consists of 20 species which are split into four genera (plural of genus). In this post, I will be covering only the genus Hoolock. The other genera will be covered in following posts.

The genus Hoolock is split to three species. All four species are found in the following countries: Bangladesh, India, China & Myanmar.

Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock)

  • Documentation of Behavioural Patterns of an endangered animal Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) at the Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam LINK
  • Population assessment of the endangered Western Hoolock Gibbon Hoolock hoolock Harlan, 1834 at Sheikh Jamal Inani National Park, Bangladesh, and conservation significance of this site for threatened wildlife species LINK
  • Socio-ecology of the hoolock gibbon (Hylobates hoolock) in two forests of Bangladesh LINK
[Note: Previously the Western Hoolock Gibbon was classified as being a member of the genus Hylobates but after more research by primatologists they are now classified as a member of the Genus Hoolock.]

Eastern Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock leuconedys)
  • Distribution and conservation status of the vulnerable eastern hoolock gibbon Hoolock leuconedys in China LINK
  • Connecting Fragments and Gibbons After a Century of Separation: A Natural Canopy Bridge at the Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, India LINK
  • Understanding the Phylogenetics of Indian Hoolock Gibbons: Hoolock hoolock and H. leuconedys LINK
  • The eastern hoolock gibbon Hoolock leuconedys population in Assam, India, is on the verge of extinction LINK
Skywalker/Gaoligong hoolock gibbon (Hoolock tianxing)
  • Confirmation of Skywalker Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock tianxing) in Myanmar Extends Known Geographic Range of an Endangered Primate LINK
  • Population, Distribution, Vocalization and Conservation of the Gaoligong Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock tianxing) in the Tengchong Section of the Gaoligongshan National Nature Reserve, China LINK
  • Filling a longstanding knowledge gap: Population size and conservation status of the Endangered Gaoligong hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock tianxing) in Houqiao Town, Yunnan LINK
Two important books on the biology and conservation on Gibbons (All Species):

  2. The Gibbons: New Perspectives On Small Ape Socioecology And Population Biology
Western Hoolock Gibbon (Bangladesh), Eastern Hoolock Gibbon (India (likely!)) & Skywalker/Gaoligong hoolock Gibbon (China).
