Description of asiatic cheetah being used to hunt from the article Newcastle Morning Herald and Miner's advocate written in 1913
THE CHEETAH The cheetah, or hunting leopard, has been trained in India from the earliest times. It Is generally employed to 'hunt the antelope, and one of the commonest ways of procedure is as follows:-A na tire cart is made use of. It Is drawn by a couple of bullocks: the cart wheels are thlck and clumsy, and groan and creak as they turn; The noise or sight of a cart does not annoy the antelope, for it is accustomed to it. A cheetah shut up in a cage is placed in the cart, which is driven towards the haunts of the an telope. When a herd is discovered, the cheetah is taken out of a cage, and sits on the seat by the side of the driver, who puts one of his arms round the ani mal, whose head is completely covered with a hood. On nearing the herd, the hood is taken from the cheetah, who, seeing the antelopes, jumps down creeps stealthily towards its prey, con coaling itself as it goes behind stones and herbage. Then, with a rush, it bounds with marvellous swiftness upon the nearest antelope, and strikes It down. As a reward the cheetah is allow to drink the blood. The cheetah differs from most leopards by being larger in its limbs.
