Today we will tell you a little bit about Pimenta (pepper) female maned wolf.
''This grouchy 6-year-old female was captured in July 2019. When we saw her up close, we noticed that she was very weak and her coat was thin, with many flaws, characteristic of scabies. She was sedated and examined and received a monitoring collar. With collected material we did several examinations and concluded the suspicion of infestation by mites that cause scabies. Even with the fragile health Pimenta was with puppies/cubs and breastfeeding, with one of the breasts indicating a mastitis.
Her treatment for scabies was quickly initiated. After three months she was recaptured. We had to share the excitement with the sadness. She was fully recovered from the scabies; becoming a beautiful and healthy wolf again. However, her breasts no longer had milk, confirming what her behavior indicated by the collar data had already shown: she had lost the puppies. The litter is always very fragile and the scab may have contributed to the loss, because the transmission of the mites occurs mainly by direct contact.
Her life is not easy. Pimenta lost her mate, the male maned wolf Rivo in November 2019. And along with her daughter Lupe they started to take care of the 60 km2 where they live. In 2/6 of this year we recaptured her and once again we found that she was pregnant. But now she is without scabies, full of life, health and ... with puppies! She got a new boyfriend and soon made up for last year's losses. We have been following her steps and soon we will show the two little wolves of 6 months.
And the best! All these wolves were welcomed by the Leite Ribeiro family from Belo Monte Farm in Mococa (SP) who became their eternal guardians! Gratitude dear friends of the Lobos do Pardo!''
