Coalitions of Kruger National Park

Happy weekend! This big boy and his coalition partner were seen guarding a wildebeest kill in the Kruger National Park, just south of Tshokwane. After eating his fill, he flopped down to rest near the kill, showing off his full mane.

On several occasions a female lion, part of a pride with cubs waiting in the bush nearby, approached the kill to see if the two males would let them eat, but the males refused, their body language making clear that they were not willing to relinquish it. I wondered whether the two males made the kill, or whether they stole it from the pride.
