Maybe the difference is similar to today's mainland clouded leopard/sunda clouded leopard, chimpanzee/bonobo, eastern/western gorilla.

Wow a 18.7 inch skull and almost 6 inch canines . I guess they needed big strong
Skulls and teeth to hunt large prey like bison ,yak ,young mammoth ,and cave bears hibernating.
