You never noticed?.. All around the Gir forest the landscape is dominated by plantations of kesar mango that grows well in kathiawar. Now because unlike rice/wheat or vegetable farms they don't need daily maintenance, those places get less frequently visited by people. With their short leafy trees these mango gardens are cool places, nice and shady, provides cover too. 
Lions prefer to make their home bases in the grooves and orchards of Greater Gir. They stay, rest, sleep, mate there.
