There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

On patrol with the coalition pair of male lions (Ridge males) in the Mara, Kenya, a few early mornings back. Territorial males such as these two spend a fair amount of their time walking, scent marking and roaring along the boundaries of the areas they defend.

My trip to Masai Mara was incredible - I loved every second of it. Nights were filled with the sounds of hippos, hyenas and lions roaring in the distance, and the glorious days were filled with wonderful lion sightings, leopard and cheetah.

I couldn't wait to meet Scarface, who together with his coalition partners Hunter, Morani and Sikio make up the group called the Musketeers. The lions had killed a hippo in the night, and when we got to them there was a female and her cubs feeding on the carcass. Scar was lying nearby relaxing in the sun. Fortunately he got up and I managed to get this photo of him.

The politics of lion society never cease to both surprise and mystify me.

This video shows what happens when one of the male sub-adult lions of the Offbeat Pride ties to make contact with Jesse one of the 2 males who rule the Offbeat who is probably his father. Jesse chases him off and then happily settles down with several of the new batch of Offbeat cubs he has helped father!

The roaring of Jesse is great to listen to as is the bemused jackal who was watching proceedings.

The six nomadic young males & two new big males..!!!
Photographer: Moses Manduku

The six nomadic young male lions killed a buffalo close to Governors Private Camp over the weekend. There was such a lot of noise that night from the marauding hyena trying to get in on the meal that this attracted the attention of two big maned lions from across the river. These two swam across the river and chased the six young males off the kill and stole it for themselves. The six young ones could have overcome these two males by their sheer number advantage but they were young, inexperienced and intimidated and could only turn tail and flee, leaving the two males to get a belly full of buffalo. By the next day the males were full and the hyena and vultures moved in, cleaning up every last scrap. Photos are courtesy of Moses Manduku, Governors Camp Head Driver - Guide.

The gorgeous Blackie. Along with his brother lipstick, they rule the Topi plains. Without doubt they are the most beautiful lions in the Mara.
