Abode of Asiatic lion gets grand makeover

*This image is copyright of its original author
Sunset point at Bhalchel, amphitheatre, selfie points, watch tower at Devaliya have all been planned
Gujarat govt is leaving no stone unturned to enhance experience of visitors from the moment they enter Gir to the time they exit with a revamp of facilities by spending Rs 30 crore in three phases

By Nischal Sanghavi

The last dwelling place of the majestic Asiatic lion is getting spruced up. To elevate the viewing experience and make it a memorable visit for visitors, the State government is upgrading facilities in and around Gir National Park and Sanctuary. Popularly known as Sasan Gir, the forest and its adjoining areas have reportedly seen a 29 per cent rise in the lion population since the last census. From 523 lions as per the 2015 census, the lion population has grown to 674 as per the ‘poonam avalokan’ or full moon night observation held recently that replaced the Lion Census 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

Gujarat Tourism Minister Jawahar Chavda said that the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited has chalked out a facelift plan to enhance visitor experience and increase tourist re-visits.

Sunset point at Bhalchel, amphitheatre, selfie points, watch tower at Devaliya have all been planned

According to Dr Mohan Ram, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Gir, “The main attraction for tourists is the national park to see the Asiatic lions in the wild habitat with different species of animals, birds and reptiles co-existing to create their own ecosystem. We are creating and upgrading facilities outside the national park, where tourists can hang out and have a better experience of the Gir visit. One of the things planned is developing a sunset point at Bhalchel hill, where tourists can spend time after the jungle safari. The sunset point will also have facilities like amphitheatre, food court, selfie points etc. The tourist area of Devaliya Safari Park will also see a major makeover with a 30-meter high watch tower to enable people to get a top view of the jungle and carry out photography. Moreover, a complete make
over has been planned for the souvenir shops, food kiosks, seating arrangements and Gir interpretation zone.”

Gir already has an arboretum with almost 1,000 varieties of botanical trees. The campus is known to have a nesting place for a variety of bird species. The facility was sparingly used till now, but now the authorities have planned to provide a walking trail, where people can experience chirping birds with exotic variety of trees. Other additions to the place like children play area in between densely planted trees and selfie points will surely make it attractive for tourists. The nature park is also renovated as a beautiful camping site where student visitors can live amidst nature and learn about local flora and fauna.

The entire project is scheduled to be completed in 12 months. The first phase will cost Rs 11cr and the second phase Rs 16 cr. Final phase has creative part and will cost around Rs 3 cr
Jawahar Chavad, tourism minister
Tourism minister Chavda said, “The entire project is scheduled to be completed in 12 months. The first phase will cost Rs 11crore and the second phase Rs 16 crore. The tenders for the last and final phase have not been floated. This phase includes the creative part and will cost around Rs 3 crore. Apart from this, the government has also provided Devaliya Safari with 10 air-conditioned buses. The buses would have full-glass viewing safari buses similar to that in Singapore night safari. This is to avoid the experience of witnessing the king of the jungle from a cage.”

The reception plaza, orientation centre, gazebo, entry gate for Sinh Sadan which is the guesthouse and safari organiser will also be refurbished. The street of Sasan that gives one the experience of a village will also be revamped for people to get a feel of the jungle. “This was a long pending project that we had begun with the forest authorities that will provide total satisfaction to tourists from the moment they enter Gir to the time they exit.”

The new facilities
1.AC full-glass buses for safari
2. Revamp of Sasan streets
3.30m watch tower at Devaliya
4.Sunset point at Bhalchel hill
5.Birding and walking park in
between botanical trees
6.Renovation of camping site
7.New facilities at Sinh Sadan

Chile's capital becomes hot spot for cougar sightings

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A cougar cub was captured in a posh Santiago neighborhood near the foothills of the Andes mountains, National Zoo officials said, the latest in a rash of recent wild cat sightings in the Chilean capital.

The cougar, a native species, had been spotted wandering around the suburb of Las Condes along with its mother and another cat, which are still at large, officials said.

Though there is no official count, the latest sightings mark a trend as cougars descend from the desolate flanks of the high Andes down into the metropolis of 6 million residents.

As months of coronavirus lockdowns have stilled the urban commotion, cougars feel emboldened to forage for food in the suburbs after years of drought, scientists have speculated.

Zoo officials said the city, too, has sprawled towards the mountains, encroaching on the cat’s habitat.

“We are going to have to get used to the presence of cougars,” said Alejandra Montalba, director of the National Zoo in Santiago. “They are here to stay.”

Zoo officials worked with police officers to capture the cougar early on Wednesday, and said they would resume the hunt for the remaining cougars at night.

The animals are typically released to the wild after officials give them a clean bill of health.

My guess is that with the lack of native herbivores to hunt outside of protected reserves these cougars are desperate for food and will try to find it into the city.

Man attacked by jaguar is saved by 5 dogs in MS.

year: 2019

Brazil.

https://g1.globo.com/ms/mato-grosso-do-s...m-ms.ghtml

According to the firemen, the victim was to verify the origin of a bad smell in the woods when he was attacked by the jaguar which protected its kill. The ONG Panthera says that the jaguar protected the carcass and that the presence of dogs may have made it aggressive.

''A 58-year-old man was saved by 5 pet dogs when attacked by a jaguar on a farm in Porto Murtinho, 440 km away from Campo Grande.

According to the Fire Department, the attack was last Sunday 14th and the victim needed medical attention because of the injuries. According to the occurrence the man took a bite and a swipe of the animal in the back region, which caused several scratches.

According to what was reported by the man to the corporation, he went to verify the origin of a bad smell in a forest accompanied by his dogs. When he arrived at the site, he found that it was a dead animal and in that moment he was attacked by the jaguar. The dogs started the barkings which surprised the big cat then it ran away.

According to Colonel Queiroz of the Environmental Military Police (PMA), on two other occasions, employees of a farm went to check the stench of animals and were attacked by jaguars as well, because especially the jaguar usually defends its food:

"It kills the prey, then keeps feeding on it and then it'll keep watching the carcass. This is one of the ways it can attack a human being, because the jaguar does not see an adult human as prey, it tends to move away but in order to defend its food or its youngs it can attack." he explains.

Leonardo Avelino, president of the non-governmental organization (ONG) Panthera explains that the jaguar may have interpreted the presence of the 5 dogs as a food "competition" for the hunt it protected: "Jaguars usually get aggressive with the proximity of dogs, the reason for the attack may have been precisely their presence." he says.

According to the firemen, the man was taken to the city hospital. He was attended and released the same day. ''

Excellent news regarding jaguar conservation in the Argentinian Chaco. Qaramta 107 kg male was able to gain access to Tania, a captive female that was brought to an enclosure in the Impenetrable National Park with the hopes of breeding with Qaramta and increasing the population of jaguars in the region, which is very low.

Direct translation from Rewilding Argentina:

QARAMTA AND TANIA JOINED FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE YAGUARETS OF THE CHACOAN IMPENETRABLE

For the first time in history, a wild male and a captive female jaguar got together, with the aim of saving the species from extinction in the Argentine Gran Chaco. Qaramta, a wild male of about 5 years old, and Tania, a captive female of 9, entered a joint pen where they could meet after almost a year of seeing each other through a fence.

With this project, Fundación Rewilding Argentina, together with the Government of Chaco and the Administration of National Parks, seek to recover the jaguar, the largest feline in the American continent. This key species of the Chaco forest —when found in healthy populations— plays a vital ecological role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

*This image is copyright of its original author

In addition, the presence of the jaguar will help create a nature tourism destination capable of promoting the development of the neighboring communities of the protected area. As is the case in Iberá, Corrientes and Pantanal, in southern Brazil, the Impenetrable Chaco can become an engine of local economies by promoting sustainable and inclusive ventures linked to nature tourism.

The jaguar is virtually extinct in the Argentine Chaco, where researchers speculate that fewer than 20 individuals survive in a very large territory. The last records of the species have corresponded to solitary males, and many of them have already been hunted.

“For a first meeting, it was very positive. They were together for four days and everything went according to plan; they got along well and there were no assaults. The process of recovering the jaguar in the Impenetrable Chaco continues its march, with more and more advances. We know that there is still a lot of work to do, but it is starting in the best way ”, enthuses Sebastián Di Martino, Conservation Director of Fundación Rewilding Argentina.

In order to carry out this delicate management action, a group of Chaco people from the neighboring communities of El Impenetrable National Park built a complex of three large corrals - the largest, one hectare - that will allow the species to be recovered in this region of Argentina.

How was the meeting of Qaramta and Tania?

For several months, Tania lived in a small corral in this protected area of the Chaco, where Qaramta often visited her. During these visits — the gate in between — they spent long hours together, communicating and keeping company.

The first step in setting up the meeting consisted of moving Tania to a small space attached to the hectare and a half board corral, and waiting for Qaramta to find her and encourage herself to cross the small entrance hall to the large enclosure. She did it calmly on a nocturnal visit, during which she visited Tania, still separated, toured the corral and, hours later, left.

When Tania went into heat, Rewilding Argentina's technical team reopened the large pen, this time activating the self-closing gate so that, upon entering, Qaramta was inside. This happened, and that same morning Tania was allowed to enter the same corral, achieving that they finally meet.

When they found that Tania no longer showed symptoms of heat, they were separated, and Qaramta left the large corral to return to the mountain. Thanks to the videos of the camera traps placed in the corral, the team was able to observe that, although there is no record of copulations on the cameras, the interaction between them was perfect: they spent a long time together and very calm.

“In one of our daily rounds, Tania came over because she heard us and we could see that it was in perfect condition, without scratches; a very good sign. There we already relaxed much more, because meetings can sometimes be aggressive, especially if he was nervous about the confinement, ”says Sebastián.

The main objective of this ambitious company is that the offspring that are born from this project are released to form part of the population nucleus that seeks to save the jaguar in the Chaco region.

A tigress was found dead in Southern India and the reason for her death is yet to be ascertained. When the park director got close to examine the body, he found two little cubs in the vicinity.

Plans are now afoot to raise these cubs in-situ for 2 years with minimal human contact and release them in the wild when they are capable. Such a facility does exist in Western Ghats to rehabilitate such cubs (like the ones from Central India).

Field director, K K Kaushal said, “We have the expertise to give the two cubs a chance at becoming wild tigers, so we will do our best to make this a reality”.

A NEW LITTER OF JAGUARS WAS BORN IN IBERÁ PARK!

Unbeatable news came along with the start of the year in northeastern Argentina: Juruna, one of the wild female jaguars living in the Jaguar Reintroduction Center in Iberá, gave birth to a new litter of cubs.

Like other times before, we were suspicious of Juruna's pregnancy as her GPS collar showed she remained several days in the same place, where we assumed she chose to establish her burrow. Recently we could confirm the birth of two beautiful cubs of about less than one month of life.

After three months of pregnancy, jaguars usually produce two cubs that come to the world with eyes shut and unable to walk. Newborn cubs are dependent on their mother and will join her tours when they are a month and a half old.

This follows the announcement of a previous litter of cubs, Korai and Pora, the were born on late 2020, and represent the third litter of jaguars born in Iberá for reintroduction following decades of being extinct in the area.
