See this, there's now a new study claiming that the taxonomic position of Central African lions may need to be revised: https://wildfact.com/forum/topic-genetic...#pid116125

Here is the original source. Lions main prey are hartebeest, buffalo and elephants.

Quote:Aerial census of the large mammals in the ZNP was carried out by the CURESS project in March 2005. With populations of 5082, 3885 and 845, buffalo, elephants and hartebeest were among the most abundant species in the Park. These three species are also apparently the most hunted by lions in the Park. We also noted a very hight level of predation by the lions on the Defassa waterbuck during the transition period between the dry and rainy seasons.

Scrolling through this thread I must say that I find these lions to be some of the most breath taking I've seen across their range, perhaps rivaling the Ngorongoro crater in terms of overall physique and morphology. As aforementioned this area appears to be a crossing path between leo leo and leo melanochaita populations and this flow of genes might be a contributing factor to the excellent health of this lions, which translates to excellent morphology. The high prey density of megafaunal elements also seems to be key, as felids' sizes and physique is a direct reflection of the environment they live in and the prey biomass they consume.

I almost feel like Asiatic lions would probably look very similar to the lions from this area in the event that they had a wider and more varied gene pool, combined with larger prey.
