With Paul Joslin (expert).
And I'm slightly dubious about second pic, interested to see if it is asiatic lion unambiguously with 'reliable' proof .

Although it's a cub, I expect them to be atleast as aggressive and wild as domestic dog if not as much as much as african lion cub or tiger cub. Kuno lion required to do this. This lion cub is too goddam docile and innocent.

When your day starts with seeing a Lion at 7am. One cold February morning our entire family, including baby niece took a road trip from our retreat home in Gandhinagar to Sasan Gir Forest on the south coast of Gujarat. There are 600 lions and lioness in the district of Junagadh, the only place in the world to see Asiatic Lions in their natural habitat. Our open jeep safari began at 6am and we regretted not carrying quilts from our room. It was freezing and it took forever for the sun to rise. It was pretty hilarious how my sister, husband, me and baby (sitting in the most open part of jeep) were bundled up with our flimsy shawls and hoodies, waiting for these Lions to show up. But when he appeared in our view, it was an exhilarating moment! He casually walked toward our open jeep, checked us out at close quarters and strolled on his morning walk - King Of the Bush Jungle for sure. You can see beautiful, delicate spotted Indian deer in the winter dawn sunlight. Bambi got nothing on them. Swipe to see our accommodation Hunter’s Lodge, now renamed Sinh Sadan Guest House, used during the British colonized India by the kings and Brit officers for hunting. They managed to kill off an entire population, until post Independence, the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat Tourism took effective measures to revive the population back to a healthy number.

I hate to be the bearer of the bad news here, but the cubs born on April 1 at Satvirda Lion Gene Pool Centre died on April 3 night due to 'careless handling' by inexperienced first-time mother lioness Sarita.
During the post-mortem, fatal wounds were found on the chest & head of both cubs. Since mother lionesses lift their cubs in their mouth, it is possible that the lioness miscalculated the pressure.

The forest staff were giving them outside milk (not sure if it's a good idea, maybe she wasn't feeding them enough) and the cubs seemed healthy after birth.

Lion Gene Pool project to boost their genetic
diversity has 4 captives in semi-wild, 2 lions Avon(the father) & Nagraj with 2 lionesses Sarita & Parvati, collected from various corners of Greater Gir at their facility in Barda Wildlife Sanctuary near Porbandar.

It's a commendable endeavour & hope they overcome these snags soon. Those are as genetically diverse cubs you'll get, can't have more of them dying off...

Yeah.

That could be the reason but, it is likely that this is the major reason for that tragedy.

Quote:"He added that such accidents happen when a lioness becomes mother for the first time and doesn't have experience of handling the cubs."

This coupled with that lack of motherly (breast) feeding might had done this to those cubs (future of asiatic lion with better diversity).
