Bagheera was completely correctly called "panther", because during 19th century "panther" was one of the names of the leopard. At those times official name of tiger was - Felis tigris and lion - Felis leo, now as you can see they have different names. Later, during the 20th century zoological nomenclature changed and word "panther" became obsolete. Obsolete doesnt mean wrong. But in 19th century when Kipling wrote Jungle Book this name was compleetely acceptable in scientific circles.

7. Not every animal is scared of Dholes including... bees, spiders... etc.

Incorrect, nowhere in Jungle book is not written that bees afraid of dholes... Actually is written opposite - that all animals in the jungle afraid of forest bees, that's why Mowgli running from the dholes intentionally attracted them close to the bees nests...

Agree with you concerning points 1,3 and 4. Brown bears for sure don't inhabit Central India, I have lived in this country long ago and know a little bit the forest inhabitans. But lets not forget that the book was written for English young auditory.

The term panther is still used, but mostly for black-panther.

For you panther means Jaguar or Puma/Cougar/Mountain lion? (because settling for one name is too mainstream...)

About the black panther. I'm not sure how much the experts of the time knew, but I do know from reading fiction, such as Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and other, that the black panther was described as an inky-black big cat half-way between the size of a lion ( or tiger ) and a leopard, with a meaner disposition any any other big cat. It was viewed as a separate species.
