He seems to have lost a bit of mane and his X brand on the left shoulder seems 'healed'.

Ha, as I first began to look at this picture, I, of course, first focused on the lion, but in my peripheral I picked up a wildebeest lying there next to him, and my mind thought, surely that cannot be. So I focused on the "wildebeest" to find it is a log, and all was right with the world again.
