Predation feats of a young Amur tigress named 'Elena'. ( Yelena )

Juvenile tigress "Yelena" killed a large male wild boar out of revenge:

“As of today, we can confirm that Yelena killed a large boar and a badger: experts found the carcasses at a place where the tigress spent a lot of time. Pavlik caught two badgers, a roe deer and probably a wolf,” said Sergei Aramilev, general director of the Amur Tiger Centre."

“The prey list gives us hope that the tigers will have no problems hunting in the future. Yelena was able to kill a large boar, which is always a serious enemy for a tiger, and Pavlik caught a roe deer, which, unlike other hoofed animals, can change its movements swiftly, thus remaining difficult prey even for such a perfect predator as a tiger. It is funny that while the tigers stayed in the temporary enclosure, boars were walking along its perimeter, which clearly annoyed the animals. So once Yelena was released, she returned to the place where the enclosure was and took her revenge on the boar. It is true that you should not anger a caged tiger!” Sergei Aramilev added.

When she was an adolescent, she also hunted and killed a bear: ( 6 September, 2020 )

According to Vyacheslav Kastrikin, deputy director of the Khingansky state reserve for scientific work, during the next certification of one of the predator's clusters, the remains of the first medium-sized bear she had caught were found.

“So far, it has not been possible to reliably establish what kind of bear was eaten by Elena - brown or Himalayan, but the fact itself is remarkable in that it is the first “clubfoot” in the diet of a tigress. And, having obtained it, she completely closed her trophy list for potential victims from large mammals. Of course, with the exception of the second type of bear,” says Vyacheslav Kastrikin.

She also hunted and killed an adult bull moose:

Having reached one cluster, where Elena, judging by the incoming signals, spent the whole day on March 17, scientists discovered the remains of an adult male moose. The successful hunt for the largest hoofed animal of the Khingan Reserve became a bright final chord for the young tigress in the development of accessible food objects - now the predator has a complete set. By the way, her brother Pavlik got his first sokhaty-three-year-old back in August last year - three months after being released into the wild. Elena took longer to do this, but the quarry she extracted was larger and older than that obtained by Pavlik.

“As it was possible to establish on the spot, Elena’s hunting for the sukhoi was not provoked by the low abundance of other ungulates in her habitat: in this region there are a stable high abundance of wild boar, red deer, and roe deer. Apparently, the tigress wanted to test herself in the prey of such a large ungulate, and she successfully coped with it. Thus, there are no ungulate species left in the reserve that the tigress has not yet obtained: previously we recorded her successful hunts for wild boars, red deer and roe deer, ”comments Vyacheslav Kastrikin , deputy director of the Khingan Nature Reserve.

"HKK has South‐East Asia's highest diversity of large ungulates which include gaur, banteng, sambar, and water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis); together these species compose 90.3% of tiger diet."

Based on the average sex and age class weights, and the number of kills in each class, the average weight of adult gaur kills was 737.8 kg and they composed 83.7% of the biomass of gaur killed by tigers. Similarly, the mean adult banteng killed weighted 652.2 kg and adults composed 85.6% of biomass of this species killed by tigers. Adults composed 48.8% of gaur and 79.4% of banteng killed by male tigers; whereas, adult gaur and banteng composed 41.1% and 37.8% of female kills, respectively."

The gaur is one of the animals that tigers in India, Indo-china, Burma and Malaya prefer as their prey. Many big bulls are killed by tigers:

This juxtaposition of a tiger with African animals is so jarring to my brain!

"This is a record shot of a Gaur killed by Tiger. Came across the carcass in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve."

"Tiger is the most cunning creature I have seen. It uses its enormous strength, as well as cunning and agility to bring down such huge fellows."

No wonder I thought he was putting on mass. I’d like to see him with the Cubs sharing the meal though.
