I was just thinking about Junior and the pride he was from, the Nkuhuma Pride. I was wondering why Nana was the only lioness of her generation in the pride that was alive, and then I realized that she was probably the only female cub/sub-adult that survived the infamous Mapogo attack on her pride that killed off most of the 20+ cubs/subs! She was turning 5 by the year of Junior's birth. Junior's mom could have been at least 3 years older.
Junior and Purple Eye probably had a mother that was an adult lioness already by the time the attack occurred. It is likely that their mother was one of the lucky adult lionesses to have survived and who possibly had offspring killed off by the Mapogos.
The other lionesses in the pride could have been offspring of some of the other much older lionesses, too. Too bad we don't know exactly how many survived. They fled and hid for awhile and stayed on the run to avoid the 6 Mapogos intent on wiping out all the youngsters.
I wonder what the official report will be regarding the sudden death of Junior. I'm sure we are all eager to know the truth!

I dont think Nana was the only one who survived.. Some lionesses of Nkuhumas got killed by Matimbas and Bboys over the years in takeovers if im not mistaken and some split and form Talamatis..
I dont have much info of Nkuhumas at that time..

This is an answer of Sabi Sabi rangers regarding the size of the Othawa male comparing to some other lions in Sabi Sands
Hi Tino. Very hard to tell when they aren't shoulder to shoulder. This is the first time we have seen Othawa in about 11 months and we are surprised by his growth and change. He is a very impressive young male. Sorry we cannot answer your question as you had hoped.

The mother of Junior and the purple-eyed lioness was killed by the BBoys during the process of took-over
1/3 Tumbela males mating with one of the Othawa lionesses (Junior's mom) today at Ulusaba Private Game Reserve, Western Sabi Sands, December 9. The subadults were seen with Sassy around Singita.

In two separate sightings: After a hot afternoon we decided to head to a waterhole and to our surprise we noticed a female lion – as we got closer we saw the pride sleeping not too far off. After some playful cubs climbed all over the females, they settled for some suckling. We heard the calls of lions in the early hours of this morning. We set out and followed their sounds until we located them in the distance. These four males were on a mission, walking on steadily and scent marking. They eventually gave in to the heat of the day and took cover under the shade of some trees.

Im a bit nervous seeing Othawa male and Mhangeni pride hanging out in Sabi Sabi, close to 4 N'ws.. If they bump into each other that can be devastating for the cubs who wouldn't be able to run away from the 4 males.. Also Othawa male was seen roaring there, that can also attract N'ws..
I hope that when OM and Mhangenis hear roars from N'ws they will return north..

The Othawa male yesterday wasn't near of the N'waswitshaka males, As well, Sabi Sabi explained that are a quite distance each-other, Which means that not are a threat for him...
