I think it still would be if C. American Jaguars didn't suffer such high habitat and prey loss. The fact that there isn't even a single Jaguar left in North America, after Jefe was lost shows the sad state of affairs.
But S. America is definitely where Jaguars thrive, even the largest male Pumas in the Pantanal don't come close to the Pantanal Females. Reply

Plus there's the fact that where jaguars and cougars coexist, the jaguar tends to aim for the larger prey and the cougar the small prey in order to avoid any kind of confrontation.

However, while @Pckts has a good point regarding the large populations in Pantanal, I believe some particular cougar (and leopard) populations can rival even an average Pantanal male jaguar. The North American cougar (Canada) and those more in the South (Chile) appear very impressive and attain quite high weights.

I wonder what others their opinion is regarding this subject. I am not that well informed when it comes to jaguars and cougars but I find there sympatric behaviour very fascinating. 

I've shared this photo before, but this cougar looks very robust and easily rivals a jaguar in terms of robustness in my opinion:

Also @Pckts  Have you ever considered visiting the Northern Jaguar reserve ? The jaguars there look interesting.

Tbh I haven't, they dont get near the acclaim they should and US relations with Mexico aren't the best atm so traveling deep into their territory seems a bit more risky.
But maybe someday, it'd be nice not to have 30 hrs of travel time to see these big cats.
