Good find, Lycaon. Information about Caspian tigers is rare. I visited the site of Barandarani and found another photograph of a large tiger shot in Iran. Both photographs, more or less, confirm the remarks on the size of Caspian tigers in 'Die Säugetiere der Sowjetunion' (Heptner (VG) and Sludskij (AA), Band III, German translation, 1980): 

" ... Es gibt wenig Angaben über Körpermaße und Gewichte turkestanischer Tiger. Die maximale Körperlänge der Männchen übersteigt 200 cm und erreicht 213, 224 und 217 cm, die Gesamtlänge liegt dementsprechend bei 312, 324 und 309 cm, wahrscheinlich auch mehr (eine Körperlänge von 270 cm - allerdings nach einem Fell - gemessen werden, wahrscheinlich auch eine Körperlänge  von 284 cm). Körpermaße der Weibchen geringer, kann offensichtlich 200 cm erreichen (Gesamtlänge 267 cm), beträgt aber gewöhnlich 160-180 cm (Gesamtlänge 240-260 cm). Das uns bekannte Maximalgewicht beträgt mehr als 240 kg, kann aber offenbar auch höher sein. Die turkestanische Tiger sind somit ingesamt kleiner als die Amurtiger, erreichen aber dennoch sehr größe Körpermaße ... " ('Die Säugetiere der Sowjetunion', Band III, 1980, pp. 123).

Although it's likely all measurements were taken 'over curves', exceptional individuals have been seen more than once. One of them was a male shot near Prishib (Lenkoran) in 1899. This tiger had a head and body length of 270 cm and a total length of 360 cm (...). Satunin (KA) saw this giant with his own eyes:

" ... Ich habe ihn noch im Fleische gesehen. Er schien mir fast so groß wie ein gewöhnliches hiesiger Pferd zu sein ... " ('Die Säugetier der Sowjetunion', Band III, 1980, pp. 124).

I've read a few books in which Caspian tigers feature. They were published in the days of the British Raj and discussed in the tiger thread. All tigers were shot in the eastern part of Iran (Mazanderan). In size, they (referring to adult males only) more or less compared to their relatives in British India.
