I believe you are referring to the frizzy hair on his shoulders and mane of Metis. And caspians have those traits. Amur tigers under AZA and EAZA are pure amurs. Another feature that I noticed about this tiger is that he has a very long muzzle! 2 year old Metis. *This image is copyright of its original author https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2018/04/30/how-spot-indianapolis-zoos-new-tiger/564110002/ RE: Captive Lion and Tiger weights - Hello - 05-27-2023 163 kg male Amur *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/S-F-Zoo-pulls-Tony-the-tiger-from-moat-3268817.php RE: Captive Lion and Tiger weights - Hello - 06-01-2023 Jasiri, 220 kg *This image is copyright of its original author RE: Captive Lion and Tiger weights - Hello - 06-04-2023 Afro Asiatic mix. 200 kg *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/2023/apr/17/life-mundane-but-thrissur-zoos-lone-lion-still-stays-active-2566595.html RE: Captive Lion and Tiger weights - Spalea - 06-05-2023 @Hello : About #747: I believed that the crossing between African and Asiatic lions were from now on forbidden because the offsprings were too weak and unable to do anything but vegetating. But the specimen you showed seems to be healthy. Is it really a crossing ? RE: Captive Lion and Tiger weights - Hello - 06-05-2023 (06-05-2023, 06:24 PM)Spalea Wrote: @Hello : Yes, he's a hybrid. Afro-asiatics in captivity do become very bulky and large, but the smallest lion (160 kg estimate) i've seen was also an Afro-asiatic and the animal was Akash's Father Ayush. Ayush is also a hybrid. The below hybrid is also large and bulky and i've seen him personally and estimate him to be 210-220 kg. He's from Mysore zoo (India). *This image is copyright of its original author Another big and well fed hybrid with a big black mane from Ranchi zoo (India) *This image is copyright of its original author

Thus yes, it seems some hybrids can be healthy. But, as concerns the tendency of a general weakness of the offspring from such crossing, I have found the info which I spoke about, from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4101049.stm In this first link, dated from 2004, it is mentionned that the hybrids suffered from tuberculosis, and had a low immunity rate. The second older link (2002) relates a mysterious disease which had affected 80 crossbred lions, slowly killing them all, as of this info date only 22 hybrids still survived but in a such state of weakness they were isolated from the other lions. Because too the indian law prohibits to kill these animals: https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna14921421 May be some serious progress have been realised, because these both links explain that the crossbreds were stopped (by sterelising african male lions living with the asiatic females). Logically no one hybrids could have survived till now.
