Corbett tigress, Paarwali

She came out again onto Sambar Road, scent marked her territory and walked passed the vehicles towards the Ramganga Reservoir. Just then a herd of deer crossed the reservoir. She began stalking them. It was that she was hunting. Moments later, Paarwali walked up the ravines. It was quite a distance from where we were. Considering that she just got into cover, I thought that she would take time before an attack on the deer. So I decided to put on a teleconverter. During those few seconds, she charged and hunted a deer across the reservoir. Due to the distance at which we were, I didn’t realise that she caught a deer. A few moments later there was a commotion and my guide and driver pointed out and said that she had a deer in her mouth.

While our jeep was right in front where we were watching the Mahaman male Tiger cooling in the water hole, there was a sudden commotion as someone saw the Tigress moving. She was well behind us, at least 70-80 metres away, with several jeeps, shrubs and people between me and the tigress.
I was very lucky to get this one, relatively uncluttered shot.

The tiger's hand's were full with food, why would it still expend hard earned energy to kill that small deer, I mean isn't it strange?

You guys must've heard of  John Vaillant & his story about the Russian poacher Volodya Markov who met his fate at the hands of a vindictive tiger. Well, Vaillant goes on to write in his book The Tiger, “Amur tigers will occasionally kill bears solely on something that we might recognize as principle.”

Vaillant could be true after all.
