I think the male lions from India are an even more ideal comparison.

found some info on this male, he has a brother and they apparently looks the same here is what I found: we came across two male lions whose unusual looking manes appeared to have been clipped by a groomer. Very unusual! Even our guides had not seen this before nor did they know what area the two males had come from.

wonder if these are the new leaders of the Xakanaxa pride? looks massive and very muscular the both of them :)

His appearance looks quite archaic, and I think this might be the appearance of the Paleo-African lion population which was prior to the divergence of the modern Afro-Asiatic lion.

Those two might be the most impressive lions I've seen recently. Something looks right about their interesting manes. I wonder how dominant the gene is, it'd be interesting to have a line of such archaic looks specimens.

This might be a case of the genetic throwback, since the DNA issue is always quite complicated.

Just like the Asian lions are genetically younger than the African lions, yet they have preserved more archaic appearance.

they look quite the same as other lions from Moremi (except the manes) which is in the Southern African lion population, I'm no expert in extinct lion population, but I know asiatic lions are most closely related to west african lions.

Moremi does have some stunning lions the two former leaders from the Xakanaxa pride where even more impressive, but these guys does still look quite young.

this is the old king from Moremi called Renoka he is absolutely huge, this is probably my favorite lion picture. this just goes to show how big lions at Moremi can grow.

RE: Lion pictures and videos - Pckts - 11-16-2015

He looks large, yes, but single picture angles can always paint a very different picture than the truth may present.

RE: Lion pictures and videos - Pantherinae - 11-17-2015

Hey @Pckts I know that pictures can fool you, but after everything I've been told, what I have read and videos and pictures I've seen he is incredebly impressiv. by far one of the most impressive cat's I've come across

I can show You a video of Renoka with his females and then show one of his females with a camera man :-) hope this paints a better picture on his size.

The lioness with the camera man is the perfect example, show the video and you really get the idea of the lioness' size. In a single shot image its deceiving, you can see her shoulders are just about the same height as the tire, she is not even up to his waist and she is still in front of him or closer to the camera so she could be smaller. He also doesn't look to be a tall man by any means as well.

Start at 1:10

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT saying he is a small lion, he isn't, but I would wager that he isn't as impressive as the photo suggests.
None of this is used to discredit a lions size just as an example of a single photograph being very tough to really judge size off of. Even the video comparing the male to the females, as we know, females come in many shapes and sizes, ages are undetermined, etc.

Comparing Jai to the Female we just saw in the recent video, we would of said with out a doubt he was 280kg male, now knowing that he weighed 238kg before scale adjustment, its becoming clear that comparing a males size when with a female is tough.

RE: Lion pictures and videos - Pantherinae - 11-17-2015

The lioness does appare big in The video aswell, if You watch more closely You can see as she approaches The camera man she bends down, In my case I don't care much about the weight but more about share size and framing, aslo in The video of The male when he walks with several females it just show's how large he is compared with lionesses in general. I agree he's not the the most bulky or massive lion, but he has the perfect shape and his framing is impressive.

Sorry I'm typing on a ruined IPad.

Ruined Ipad... sorry for your loss. haha
Thats a bummer

To me she doesn't appear larger than others, if you watch her cautiously sniff the briefcase you can see a true scale next to the man since he is close to that. But I may see average and you may see large, individual eyes always differ as we have learned time and again.

RE: Lion pictures and videos - Pantherinae - 11-17-2015

Haha thanks it's about time to get a new one for sure.

Oh I thought you said she looked small, no she's not 160 kg lioness for sure, but what I ment is that even on average lionesses it's rare that male Lions will appare so much bigger, and very few lions will look bigger on his lionesses than this preticular male.

He's a big male, definitely. But I was just commenting on that image where he looks to be taller than the hood of the jeep and way longer than the jeep is wide. Its just deceiving after seeing so many lions close to jeeps now I know what to expect when using them to scale.
In regards to females, its to hit or miss. Like I said about Jai and the video of the female, she is said to be a good sized female, jai made her look like a cub. But if she is a good sized female that would mean she is probably 130-160kg which would mean Jai is only 100kg more than her at most, and looking at it, there is no way you would think he is any thing less than double her size.

I think like males, females run a wide range of weights and measurements, its just to hard to look at a male next to a female and say he or she is especially large or small. I mean none of us would have ever thought that Choti Tara was 85kg than imagine if we see a large tiger like Jais size next to her, we would say hes the most massive tiger to ever walk the earth and praise him like some sort of tiger god. Its just so hard to tell as you are aware.

Age, and size, before beauty. With intense pressure on waterholes due to the absence of rain, the usual bullying of other species is intense. This stunning male sneaked a drink much to the displeasure of the bull elephants.
