RE: Asiatic Lion - Data, Pictures & Videos - Ashutosh - 02-13-2020 @Lycaon, Asiatic lions are just too comfortable around people. I get that human-predator relationship should be appreciated, but the Asiatic lions are just too comfortable around humans and personally, I find it disconcerting. RE: Asiatic Lion - Data, Pictures & Videos - Lycaon - 02-13-2020 @Ashutosh Indeed it is beneficial that they are on good terms but disconcerting at the same time. Madhavpur is an important turtle breeding & conservation centre. While the incident happened some 8 km from the actual beach, wildlife experts and forest department officials said chances are strong that the lions could come well close to Porbandar. Interestingly, forest officials said that the lion crossed the coastal Mangrol town to reach this beach. The lion was sighted somewhere between Madhavpur and Antroli in reserve forest area. The deputy conservator of forest, Porbandar, DJ Pandya said, “A pride of lions has made a permanent home along Mangrol and Veraval coast. We believe that this lion has came here after crossing the urban habitation in Mangrol town. It has likely walked nearly 25 km to reach this spot.” Priyvrat Gadhvi, a member of state wildlife board, said, “This is the fall-out of expanding lion population. In the last five years, increasing number of lions are venturing near human habitations. First it was only farms, but now they have also started crossing town.” “It’s only a matter of time that lions may soon identify dogs are their potential prey,” he added. According to experts, lions might be exploring a new territory or merely searching for prey. Chief conservator of forest (wildlife circle) DT Vasavada said, “This is the second time in the last six months that lions have ventured in this area. We are tracking their movement and activity to ascertain if the pride wants to make this a new habitat.” Interestingly, last week of January, Supreme Court finally asked the Centre to respond on a public interest litigation plea by an NGO seeking initiationto relocate some Asiatic lions from Gujarat's Gir forest to Madhya Pradesh. A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde, Justices BR Gavai & Surya Kant issued notices to MoEFCC along with other parties connected in the matter, seeking their replies within four weeks as the counsel for the petitioner contended to initiate the process of relocation from Gir to Kuno as the designated area has been made ready accordingly. The Centre's counsel contended that the issues had come before the court in 2018, after several lions died after contracting deadly canine distemper virus. He cited that the top court in 2013 rejected a contempt plea stating the lions were not relocated from Gir, but at that point in time, Kuno was not ready for introduction of Asiatic lion, as a tiger was spotted there.
