RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 07-20-2016

The before and after photos of the Trilogy male and the Ross male fight. Originally i thought the Ross male did not receive any new scars from the fight. But looking at the photos it must have been one epic fight between the two of them.

RE: Lions of Timbavati - Tshokwane - 07-20-2016

From Tintswalo First blood drawn between two male Lion coalitions:
Mbiri pride (4)

The Mbiri pride have been at the center of the drama, and the two coalitions seem to be competing for the same pride. The pride has been seen interacting with both coalitions as well, seemingly unable to make their minds up. The Mbiri pride have been staying in the area around Buffalo plains and Lomfane area for the week, and on the 1st of July they attempted to hunt Buffalo on Lomfane, but failed miserably in the attempt. The next day they were found close to that area, at Khoka Moya camp, where they spent the day. We then didn’t see the Mbiri’s for a few days, until they were found flirting with the thanda impi males on Catwalk west. This was after the Thanda Impi males ganged up on one of the Avoca males. The tracks suggest that the Avoca male was with the Mbiri pride at the time of the attack.

Thanda Impi male Lions (3)

The first sighting we had of the Thanda Impi’s was on the 3rd of July. One of the Avoca males was calling, and the Thanda Impi’s were found responding to these roars on Helens road. We followed as they roared and scent marked, moving east and securing the area around the Nharhu pride, with whom they have 10 cubs at the moment. Two days later, they were found with the Nharhu pride on a Buffalo kill, close to Main Dam. It all seemed to have quietened down, until the morning of the 5th of July. The guys found one of the Avoca male Lions, looking quite badly beaten up. The Thanda Impi males, were then found with the Mbiri pride, only a short distance away on Catwalk west. They seem to have timed their move very well, finding the much larger Avoca male without his brother. Relying on team work to secure their territory! The mark of a successful coalition of male Lions.

Avoca male Lions (3)

These two big male Lions came in with a bang this week. They came in roaring, and looking for the Mbiri pride, and to be honest, looking for a fight too. The first sighting was on the 3rd of July, Alistair found one of them on Rians folly, moving north and roaring! A clear statement was being made. That afternoon, we found the other male at leopards drift. About a kilometer from where the Thanda Impi males had responded. He moved even further south, roaring and walking in  the direction on the Thanda Impi’s. Once again, a clear message was being sent. It all went quiet, until the morning of the 5th, when the same Avoca male, that went looking for a fight, was found quite badly injured on Windi Windi. The Thanda Impi’s had double teamed him, and he had an injured eye and some serious looking bite marks on his back legs. Round one to the Thanda Impi’s, but this is far from over!

Amazing, Ross males vs Trilogy males, Avoca vs Thanda Impi, and also the Mazopa males, Timbavati is a war zone!

From Tintswalo Safari Lodge
An Epic 5 Day Safari Update...

On the afternoon of the 19th of July the Mbiri pride was relocated with their Buffalo kill on Red road. The rest of the afternoon was quiet, with some nice Elephant and Buffalo sightings.

The morning of the 20th, had the Thanda Impi male lions joining the Mbiri pride with the Buffalo kill on Red road.

The afternoon of the 20th, the Thanda Impi male lions and Mbiri pride were relocated on Red road, and the kill was finished. The Rhulani male Leopard was also found close to White house/Wild dog dam.

On the morning of the 21st, the Talamati pride and both Selati male Lions were found close to Buffelshoek plains with no less than 4 Buffalo kills. The Makhambo male leopard and an unknown female Leopard were also found on Buffelshoek access with an Impala kill. The Rhulani male leopard was found on Khoka Moya cutline.

The afternoon of the 21st, saw no new sighting. There guys relocated the Talamati pride and Selati males, as well as the two leopard on Buffelshoek access.

The morning of the 22nd, saw the guys relocating the talamati and Selati male Lions with their Buffalo kills.

Saturday the 23rd was interesting. 4 of the Mbiri Lionesses were found on Vulture pan road. The Nharhu pride was found at Main Dam. The Thanda Impi male Lions were found mating with one of the older Mbiri lionesses at Sable bridge.

Yesterday afternoon, the Thanda Impi males and Mbiri lioness were relocated at Sable bridge, and the mating continued. The rhulani male Leopard was found on male run, trying to hunt Warthog.

This morning, the Nharhu pride was found close to Main Dam. The Sable bridge Leopard cubs were found at Reddbuck plains. A pair of mating Hyenas were also found at Marula ridge.

From SunDestinations
Hercules Pride Seen in the Rain at nThambo & Africa on Foot

Two reasons to celebrate this morning: Firstly, a drizzle of merciful rain pitter pattered on the drought-stricken soil last night, and secondly, the Hercules Pride emerged from their secretive lives to greet nThambo Tree Camp andAfrica on Foot guests on game drive! This pride has a reputation for being quite shy, so when we bumped into them on our property, we were pleasantly surprised and very well rewarded. Two lionesses and 4 youngsters make up the Hercules Pride, and we’ve enjoyed catching up with them every so often, but we know from experience that they flee under the best of circumstances! Luckily, it looks like the last few months in hiding have given the Hercules Pride some confidence, because this morning’s sighting of them was nice and relaxed… By Hercules standards…

nThambo ranger, Bjorn, set out on game drive this morning with a little light rainfall to keep his guests company, and it didn’t take long before a series of fantastic sightings emerged from the rehydrated bush. Elephants appeared to be celebrating the presence of rain (as are we all), and a herd of buffalo was also spotted moving through the area adding to the morning’s big game features! The lions were, perhaps, the cherry on top, especially considering the last sighting we’ve had of this pride was about 3 months ago when they fought with the Ross Breakaway lionesses and left them worse for wear. Prior to that, Africa on Foot was treated to the pride on a buffalo kill right outside camp in December last year.
There has been a lot of exciting activity in the Klaserie with the arrival of Mabande, then the Mapoza males, and the tension was felt by the Ross Breakaway lionesses who ended up in a scuffle with the Mapozas over a kudu kill. The Hercules Pride, however, has been lying low, but as it turns out, all is well, and those 4 cubs are hardly cubs at all! Three males and one female cub (sired by one of the Trilogy males) are looking fantastic, and the lionesses are as strong and ferocious as ever. Towards the end of a very enjoyable sighting, the noticeably enormous lioness we have come to expect a bit of aggression from decided she didn’t like the vehicles starting up and gave us a bit of snarl.
Africa on Foot guests were out on game drive instead of their usual morning walking safari due to the weather, and it looks like they got lucky! The Hercules Pride is always a magnificent sight, and as we’ve mentioned, they disappear as quickly as they pop up, so this game drive in the rain was well worth it. This afternoon, stations are ready to track down the ever-elusive pride and hopefully we’ll have an update for you later!

From Pondoro Game Lodge

Another photo of the younger Mohlabetsi male as he feeds on his buffalo kill. He showed that he is young, strong and fearless as he caught the buffalo by himself. What a sight to see before being even 30 seconds from camp! Not even enough time to wipe the sleep from our eyes.

Young male lion of Mohlabetsi coalition staring at his food, another buffalo kill on the 15th of July. The drought has weakened the buffalo sufficiently to make them fairly easy pickings for hungry lions. A huge reward for less risk to injury than usual.

An amazing lion kill sighting. In part 1 we sight a pride of lions taking down a buffalo. The buffalo put up a good fight. In part 2 we sight the big Kapama lion, Moria Madoda, walking towards the buffalo kill.

Information about Duma

From Klaserie Drift
15/07/16
An amazing sighting this week, a new and rather large male lion in pristine condition was spotted on our property! Guests stumbled upon him whilst doing a walking safari and investigating a dead buffalo, you can imagine their surprise when he stood up and growled at them!!

This Big Boy has hung around all week with his carcass, protecting it from vultures and drawing very little attention to himself, so as not to alert our 2 resident gentlemen Warlord and Blondie to his presence!

Guides picked up his tracks leading away from the Koppie to the pan outside of Amani’s fence and back in that direction, it would appear that this guy knows his way around here and is perhaps more of a local than we think!

A quick follow up on the Male lion we saw the other day. His name is Duma and was the resident Dominant male of the Olifants West Pride.

On the map you can see how far he has travelled. We are wondering where he is off too now, as he is alone and was receiving pressure from Warlord & Blondie.

RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 07-28-2016

The 2 Singwe males has been spoiling us with sightings the past few days, with them bringing down a buffalo cow yesterday morning. Kept the entire camp up ( guests & staff alike ) with their roaring during the night. After following up this morning we were puzzled to find that they abandoned the carcass ( still a lot of meat left ) & after some serious tracking by Themba Zwane and bundu bashing we found them seeking a sunny spot to sleep off their full bellies.
