Did she succeed? Nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her cub.

Edit: nvm I saw it, she did it. Drove off the lion and protected her cub, all were unharmed.

Amazing mother she is

was about to post the pictures of the female leopard protecting her cub as well, she's really brave and lucky!
but I have never seen a leopard getting this close to a lion. I think the leopards would have been more careful with a lioness, because the lionesses are quicker, and could have caught her. the terrain there helped as well.

I don't think it would of mattered, she was going to die for her cubs. Like the Puma fighting off the Grizzly, a mother cat/bear will die on their "shield" to protect their offspring.
Its a beautiful thing to watch... A mothers love is the most transferable thing when comparing us to them.

for a cat attacking a bear is not the same as fighting a bigger cat , for sure cat's will usually never die for the cubs they will take big risks to protect their cubs, but like you will never see a cheetah attacking a lion. attacking other types of animals is different. a feral cat attacking a lynx or cougar will never happen, but cat's will attack large dog and even like the caracal mother up against 3 hyenas, but if a leopard had appeared she would flee herself.

a leopard getting this close to a male lion is by far the most impressive thing I've ever seen a mother cat have done, if she had gone on the physically she would go into a sure death, a 40 kg female leopard against a 200 kg lion, it's madness and the leopards amazing agility added with her mother instinct saved the cub. a lioness would most likely have caught her.

Edit: I found the video of the fight. There isn't a proper audio of it, as they were far of it, but you can get a better sense of how males fight, the tactics they use and also how the fight is kept to a relatively low level, as to not cause much hurt towards the coalition mate.

A fantastic sighting this week of the Jacaranda pride. Not only did they make a young hippo kill but they fought a single male lion(the Birmingham male, one of the fathers of the young Birmingham boys) from the klasserie that tried to take their kill away.
Even though the one male lion from the Klasserie was outnumbered by 4 males and 3 females he still tried to chase the pride away from their hippo kill. Eventually the males from the Jacaranda pride went after the single male and started to fight.
The single male was pushed down for a couple of minutes and eventually chased away.

Although from some years back, a great sighting.
And one that shows, once again, the importance of a coalition for the males, with the sub-adults of the pride, three of them with almost bare heads still, over powering an adult male that must have been dozens of kg heavier than them.
