Three persons chase lion pride on a bike, probe launched

RAJKOT: A video of three persons harassing a pride of lions by chasing them on a bike went viral on social media on Tuesday.
According to forest department sources, the video was shot in some village of Amreli district’s Lilya taluka in a revenue (non-protected) area. Two persons on a bike with a pillion rider holding the mobile camera and their friend running along with the vehicle are seen chasing a pride of around five lions through a field on a dirt road near the village. The lions are seen frantically running away into the wild even as the trio keep following them speedily.

The video has once again exposed the forest department’s inability to curb harassment to the lions. When contacted, conservator of forest, Rajkot, A C Patel under whose jurisdiction this area falls, told TOI:
Quote:“We came to know about this video on Monday evening and probe has been initiated to identify the people. We have got the RTO registration number of bike and based on this, , we will track the perpetrators very soon.”
According to sources, illegal lion shows are rampant in Gir and greater Gir area. It was only after a video of Gir and greater Gir area. It was only after a video of some persons luring a lioness with a chicken that went viral few months ago that the forest department announced various steps to curb the such shows. Over 50 teams were formed to keep a watch on people who harass the lions in four four districts where lions are found...

Brother's duo was amazing. eye feast to see them strolling. (I post most of the videos in which lions belly is stiff not with loose skin under belly like older ones coz I don't like them much, I like gir lions which look similar to african counterparts)

Asiatic Lion distribution and Historic range Map with: Confirmed record and Present Location.
The historic range can be more than those dots further but there were no evidences nor fossils found beyond that. The fossils may or not be discovered ever in those areas. My Grand Father told me that there were lions, tigers, bears and cheetahs in the forests at the time of his childhood. His village was of Eastern Ghats, Palakonda range in Srikakulam in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, an interface area with orissa border (He know what is a lion and difference b/w cheetah and leopard). They might have lived but there was no evidence found now, may or may not be found in future.

A wide hearted Asiatic Lioness adopted a leopard cub and nurturing it along with her own two lion cubs. currently, it is protecting the leopard cub with care, away from male lions.

Yes, @Pckts. African Lions were observed to adopt Wildebeest calf, Antelope calves and Leopard cubs (particularly, 2017 incident in Tanzania of a lioness adopting and rearing a leopard cub but it didn't last longer than a day whereas this unique asiatic lioness relation and association is unusual as the forest dept is observing them living together for 7-8 days from now. It is uncertain that if the lioness wants to join its pride again, what will be the consequences and future of this little foreign species kid) etc..,

It is still unknown how the leopard cub met lioness... whether it is orphaned or its mother still alive left its cub alone hidden somewhere in bushes found by the lioness to take care, so that leopardess is afraid of the presence of lioness to take her cub again. Gir lioness is rearing the leopard cub by breast feeding milk to it along with its own two cubs, protecting it from other predators (may be including the leopard cub's real mother if exists...) and leopard cub was seen playing with other two bigger lion cubs most of the time. Leopard cub learning to understand lion's communication and vocalizations. Presently, Raksha is taking all the 3 cubs along with the spotted one (Mowgli) away that is out from the reach of resident males and living alone separately from its pride...This incident happening in Gir west division. 30 rescued lions captive even after three months

Rajkot: It’s well over three months now that 30 lions were captured after the deadly canine distemper virus (CDV) had claimed lives of 23 lions in Dalkhaniya range of Amreli district.
However, the prolonged captivity in the rescue centre in Devalia and Jamvala is taking a toll on them now.
Quote:According to sources, many of the lions have become extremely irritable and fights between them are also frequent.Experts have flagged serious concerns over the delay in releasing these lions in the wild and said besides the adverse change in behaviour, their adaptability to the wild would also reduce. This threat looms on sub-adult or cubs in particular as they may find it difficult to hunt by staying in enclosed space for a long time.
Ferocious roars of lions are often heard from the rescue centre, which is indicative of the in-fighting among them. Care takers there are also under constant threat of attack due to the behavioural changes. It is also believed that the behavioural change in a captive lion in Devalia Safari Park due to coexistence with wild animals in enclosure had result in the fatal attack on a labourer result, Majority of the lions were shifted to Devalia due to space crunch in Jamvala. Sources close to the development told TOI that delay is being caused due to government procedures.
Priyvrat Gadhvi, member of State Wildlife Board said, “Wild animals brought for treatment are normally released within 10-15 days from the captivity. If there is more delay, it would eventually become unviable to release them in the forest as they willl lose their wildness.”
“I haven’t heard of instances where wild animals kept in prolonged captivity are released again, at least not in such big numbers,” he said. The 30 lions account for roughly 5% of the total lion population in Gir sanctuary and outside areas. In September last year, 23 lions had died within 20 days due to the CDV, a warning that the forest department had chosen to ignore despite being sounded off at least a year ago by experts.
H S Singh, member, National Wildlife Board said, “It is possible that such a long captivity will make it unviable to release them in wild. They may move close to human population if they are released after a long delay.
About the decision of the release he said “We have to find a habitant to release them, because the population of lions is increased in last few years because of conservation affords so a collective decision will be taken.”
Chief conservator of forest (wildlife circle), D T Vasavada, said, Due to the spread of CDV, we don’t want to release them in the Dalkhaniya range. They are under observation after vaccination and booster dose. There are some technical issues like timing of the release and the proper way to do so. We are taking the opinion of experts and a decision will be taken soon.”
