Video - A half grown elephant was walking towards a waterhole and passing by two male lions that were resting below a tree. For some reason the elephant charged the lions and turned his back to them. Lion, anticipated the situation quickly and then took him down.

What strikes me almost every time I see lion photos is the length of their shinbone and calfbone! Now I don´t know, if this is because they actually have longer shinbones and thus are taller than tigers, despite the data we have, which shows that both are about the same shoulder height on average, or because lions don´t have the same mass on their lower leg parts as tigers have. Thus the impression of having longer legs. My eyes always tell me lions are definitely taller. Really strange!

Very interesting read in terms of the limb bone length and overall forelimb length.
Quote from the book regarding reliable measurements and weights:,, It may be safe to suggest, that on average, the lion can be said to be the biggest living cat, and taking into account the extinct massive American Lion, the lion may even be the biggest felid ever known."
It seems, that older weights, especially from hunters, are being critically looked at in this book.

Other thing, this has bees discussed previously several times, and although the conclusion was that on average, lions are heavier than tigers at the species level, it is unfair and silly to say that they are the largest cat, because in absolute therms, the largest tiger subspecies are larger than the largest lion subspecies, and this is something that Yamaguchi barely mention, and besides, he don't present evidence, sources or even the list of records that "he" believe are reliable. it is interesting that he is the only scientists that say that tigers are not the largest cats, the ONLY one. Even Kitchener -the Coauthor- refrain to say something like this, in ALL his publications. Something is fishy here [img]images/smilies/dodgy.gif[/img]
As we know, Yamaguchi also firmly believe that Panthera (spelaea) atrox (forget the leo here, ok?) was a "lion", but like I mentioned before, and even using the document of Barnett et al (2009 - about the DNA issue), the American "Lion" was not a lion, but a different species, closely related with the jaguar-lion-leopard clade, something supported by the DNA and morphology. In fact, the modern leopard is in fact, more related with the lion as they separated about 500,000 years ago, while the Cave lion group (from where the Panthera (spelaea) atrox evolved) separated from the original steam about 600,000 years ago, about 100,000 years earlier!
Finally, Yamaguchi simply ignored the fossils of other large cats and simply quoted what he "read" in the books. It is obvious that Panthera atrox was not the largest cat of all history. The title belongs to the Ngandong tiger (Panthera tigris soloensis - femur of 480 cm), to the Cromerian "lion" (Panthera spelaea fossilis - skull of 482 cm) and Smilodon populator (weight of over 400 kg).
It is important to take in count that although Yamaguchi is a scientists "by its title", this don't make him "infallible" or "perfect" in any way. In fact, there are several cases of "scientists" in the past that have been corrected by amateurs that studied the same evidence and have presented they cases, and not talking only of Biology. Sadly, in these days, the scientific field is more like a "Religion", where no one can think outside the box.

That was simply used for bone length in limbs.
When you say "lions on average" what do you mean?
Even if you add Sumatran tigers, the tigers average are still larger. Waza lions are the equivalent of Sumatran tigers more or less.
Now comparing sub species to sub species, it is even more distant.
Bengals are the largest cats alive today, at maximum or average.
Amurs are 2nd with Lions being 3rd. Although I think Amurs of old where the larger than todays and probably rivaled Bengals in size.
