Gerhard Steenkamp Wildlife and Nature Photography:
One of the two males at Nxai Pans - Botswana. Not the dominant one but still a great character.

Always a few meters (50+) behind the leader causing a lot of irritation and frustration to the dominant male who have to slow down and wait for this one every couple hundred meters.

"This young male lion was relaxing with two other young male lions in South Luangwa (Zambia). After a while this lion stood up and walked towards me. I was sitting on the pessenger seat next to the driver. I was in an open 4x4 without a door. The lion looked at me and when he was at around 3m of me the guide started the engine. That scared the lion and he ran in another direction. It really looked like he was going for me. Goosebumps! Besides the 'usual' African wildlife I also saw a lot of 'unusuals'." August 2015

"A wildfire was spreading through the Serengeti grasslands in Tanzania, getting dangerously close to a lion's den, filled with tiny, newborn cubs. Sensing the danger, this lioness carefully picked up each cub in turn and carried them almost a mile away to safety.  As soon as each was delivered, she went back for the next, until all five were safely relocated. I was struck by her dedication, here symbolized by her ability to utterly ignore the swarms of flies that were gathering on her face." Masai Mara, Kenya. May 2012

"A young male lion drinks from a small pond after a late afternoon hunt. I loved the shape of his muscular crouch - not unlike a house cat at a bowl of milk - and the fearless, direct stare of a predator. It's been a few years since I was last in Africa, so I look forward to this July when I will be the photo leader on a special Wing Safari to some key places in Southern Africa. Lions, elephants and, if we're lucky, leopards and wild dogs. I can't wait." Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. February 2013

"There are 15 lions in this pride: 3 females and a host of cubs of varying ages. This means a lot of hungry mouths to feed. We never saw them hunting, but encountered them several times in the shaded river courses of this vast, arid reserve. Here, a mother admonishes a playful cub. A simple snarl normally does the trick." "It is amazing how - in a moment, a gesture - this enormous, rather terrifying lion can be transformed into a stretching house cat, preparing to curl up in front of the fire.
This was a magical night in the Okavango, when we tracked four male lions which were, in turn, following two females, one of whom must have been in heat. Wherever the females went, the males were always right behind them, all through the day and night. As always, we hated to leave before the story was finished, before the males - possibly brothers - did battle over who would win the female. I don't know how the story turned out, but I am grateful to have read even one chapter." Okavango Delta, Botswana. August 2013

This guy!

Very fortunate to photograph him several times during our 6 days in the Serengeti. His curled lip and facial scars were great for identification.

Hostile takeover. What an incredible morning in Etosha despite the overcast skies! These 4 boys moved in to the area last night and called continuously, scent marking everywhere, then in their testosterone overload, a fight broke out amongst them. Haven't completed the edit, but just had to post one of the images. They are at the Namutoni waterhole right now, doing the same!

Another image from the lion cub interacting with one of the males of the Savuti based pride by inviting him to play. After hesitating the male was giving in and responded to the cub greetings.

Sniffing lions part 3. It may look like the middle guy is snarling, but he is actually doing a flehmen response, most likely analyzing another lion's scent mark.
