RE: Bila Shaka coalition - Pantherinae - 01-11-2020 Koshoke and Kiok sharing a Topi carcass. RE: Bila Shaka coalition - Pantherinae - 01-11-2020 Nowhere is nature’s story more real, raw and brutal than the Mara. We left this morning from camp and headed in the direction of lion roars. What we weren’t prepared for was a full on massacre of the elephant and baby that saw yesterday - the Topi plains pride had got them both overnight and were feasting away. Followed by Ololparpit and Obarnoti chasing Doa for pride takeover and hyenas meddling in too. Absolutely crazy morning. More photos later ... *This image is copyright of its original author

RE: Bila Shaka coalition - Pantherinae - 01-15-2020 Baba Yao and Kiok fight over female. The Six Marsh Males reside and control much of the east marsh, Bila Shaka and Topi Plains areas – these six males have sired the cubs of the Marsh Pride lionesses and Madomo/Ridge Pride. The most dominant of the six males is Baba Yao – he has also sired the majority of the cubs to the Madomo/Ridge Pride. These males tend to move between the two prides and on the late morning of the 25th, in the lower Topi Plains grasslands, two members of the six-male coalition fought heavily over an oestrus lioness. It was Baba Yao who was shaken and put down by another younger male on this morning. These males also like to move around between the west Marsh, Bila Shaka, Olare Orok and Malima Tatu are – this is a large home range. *This image is copyright of its original author

The first time I saw this short sequence on a instagram site, I posted it (see #419 "Felids interaction; intraspecific conflicts" *) by adding "Sometimes, I didn't love lions", because it was very brutal. Thank to the Ranger's explanations, I inderstood this young male wasn't the son of its killer, but the male's son which was dethroned a few time before. And then, of course, the situation of this young male was very precarious: to old to be immediately killed after the "males substitution", still too young perhaps to be expelled out of the pride (or perhaps it didn't see it might go away), it was in great danger. For the new dominant male, it was a potential threat, so a potential opponent has been eliminated. * see #419: https://wildfact.com/forum/topic-felids-interactions-intraspecific-conflicts?page=28 RE: Bila Shaka coalition - Pantherinae - 01-16-2020 Doa with the elephant cow. *This image is copyright of its original author Amazing picture!
