RE: Lions of Timbavati - jacksonsmash - 12-11-2016 The dynamics are so Fascinating RE: Lions of Timbavati - Tshokwane - 12-13-2016 Credits to Shindzela Tented Camp. One of the Sumatra males and three Avoca female lions roaring next to our game drive vehicle. Click on it to play. And turn the volume up. RE: Lions of Timbavati - Tshokwane - 12-13-2016 Credits to Latest Sightings Kruger. *This image is copyright of its original author All of this action was captured on film by 27 year old, Field Guide Almero Klingenberg at Kings Camp (Timbavati) on 26 November 2016. *This image is copyright of its original author Almero told LatestSightings.com: “After spending 20 years in the bush, this was an incredibly rare sighting!! I have never seen anything like this before! *This image is copyright of its original author We stopped the game vehicle and sat silently with the 2 male lions whilst they were sleeping. One of my guests happened to ask me if the lions would react should another specie happen to walk by. It’s as if those words were heard by the lions because not even a minute later hyenas began communicating not too far away. The 2 lions jumped up and immediately ran into the area where the sounds were coming from. When they got close to the den, they started to stalk and run towards the hyenas. *This image is copyright of its original author One of the male lions, known as the Timbavati male lions, grabbed a young hyena cub from the den and immediately bit into him. He also shook him around allowing the youngster no chance of survival. Both the hyenas and lions were staring each other down and then began moving around the vehicle. *This image is copyright of its original author Emotions were running extremely high at this point as it was sad to witness the hyena cub get killed while on the other hand, we were also left extremely fascinated by this rare occurrence. The lions chased the hyenas away and began to mark their territory at the den letting off huge roars as they did so. RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 12-14-2016 From Tintswalo Safari Lodge Safari update The afternoon of the 11th was a wet one. The Mbiri pride however made it easy for us. They killed a Buffalo right in the lodge, at baker suite. Only 4 of the females were present though. We managed to find the other female on catwalk west, but she moved back into the drainage line, towards her cubs. The morning of the 12th started off with ball 5 of the Mbiri lionesses on our delivery access. We then had some good general game sightings on Madache, including an elephant calf of only a few weeks old. The Thanda Impi male Lions were found on Piva path later in the morning. In the afternoon, the Thanda Impi male Lions were found again on Piva path. The Mbiri pride were found on Windi Windi, this time with the cubs out in the open. It was a privilege to spent time with the cubs, who are as relaxed as their mothers. A skittish female leopard was briefly seen on Mantwaan Mphisi. This morning, we started off with the Thanda Impi male Lions on Catwalk west. The Tekwane male Leopard was found on civet road as well. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: Lions of Timbavati - stoja9 - 12-15-2016 Seems like a heavily forested area for lions to be living in. Interesting... RE: Lions of Timbavati - Fredymrt - 12-21-2016 Mohlabetsi male lion's The 2 big Mohlabetsi males patrolling their territory They are part of a coalition of 8 males that rule over huge part of Balule Nature Reserve RE: Lions of Timbavati - Tshokwane - 12-21-2016 Credits to Tinstwalo Lodges. Yesterday afternoon, we found the Thanda impi male Lions on catwalk west. The Sizanani male was limping, with an injured left back leg. They say he has no external injuries. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author
RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 12-22-2016 From Baobab Ridge Game Lodge Our guests had some incredible sightings last night and this morning! One of the sightings was this lion chase! Two lions chasing the one Mapoza male from our farm in the Klaserie all the way to the entrance gate of the reserve! Some nice roaring and action!!!! RE: Lions of Timbavati - vinodkumarn - 12-24-2016 Some playful pics of the Breakaway lionesses, who have most recently been seen mating with the Timbavati males. Times are a changing once again in the lives of the Klaserie lions, with an adrenalin-pumping chase taking place between a Mapoza male & two new-comers that have come through the Timbavati. The Mapoza was on the losing end and was chased relentlessly, all the way down the road, and eventually out of sight. His younger coalition partner was seen at a pan, and later that night moved in the direction that his brother had been chased, calling out to him. What lies ahead for the Mapoza males? Meanwhile, this glimpse of playfulness was fantastic to watch out on game drive recently. *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author *This image is copyright of its original author Credits: Isaack Zorkin RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 12-24-2016 Old Avoca males. RE: Lions of Timbavati - Fredymrt - 12-24-2016 (12-10-2016, 12:24 PM)jacksonsmash Wrote: Where does this mohlabetsi coalition come from.Lion dynamics can be complicated at best, so I will try to keep things simple here: "The Mohlabetsi pride formed in 2008 when 3 young lionesses split away from the Olifants west (York) pride. The Olifants west pride was first seen in 2003 consisting of 2 lionesses called Kokwana and Mother lion as well as the legendary males Big Boy and Mazinyo. Mother lion gave birth to 4 cubs, 3 females and a male in June 2005 and it is these 3 lionesses that split away to form the Mohlabetsi pride. The Olifants west pride at that stage were 13 lions strong and the amount of food intake per energy expanded to make a successful hunt made it more beneficial to split away and start their own pride." 2008: Duma and his brothers were born in late 2008-early 2009 to the Olifants West Pride of lions ( these 2 are/were part of the 6 original Olifants W males) Between 2011-2013 after the death of the their 2 fathers big boy & mazinyo. The boys fought for new dominance in the pride (while sometimes, brothers will remain in a coalition and both dominate the pride), and the Olifants West Pride split. °Duma's brother(mohlabetsi male)and his pride, the olifants west Split pride (also referred to as Mohlabetsi pride or York pride) He is the original leader of the Pride of lions, which is currently 13 members strong. There are roughly 8 males who have been seen without their female counterparts, of which there are 5. Now, we have 4 different prides all 4 prides are somehow related to the original Olifants West megapride. The Olifants west/York pride split in 3 last year and the pride names are now as follows: Noengu Mafazi’s pride of 13 is renamed to River pride Pride of 6 is now Impalabos pride Kudyela/Duma’s pride name stays the same Mohlabetsi pride’s name stays the same as well as the Singwe pride. Mohlabetsi male coalition stays the same with the big male named the Mohlabetsi male and it is generally accepted that they now reign over the Mohlabetsi, River and Impalabos prides." Awesome info, thank you very much. When I read that they separated, it puzzled me. Why didn't they stay and rule their territory together? I guess there's always some male around that doesn't want to come second in everything. RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 12-25-2016 From Kambaku Lodge We have had a great week in the Timbavati with many great sightings of the Mapoza male lions with the Ross break away females, two young male lions also seen with the Ross girls and another two males seen for the first time in our area. We had Marula female leopard and another two females seen further to the West as well as a pack of wild dogs in the West. RE: Lions of Timbavati - Gamiz - 12-25-2016 From Tintswalo Safari Lodge Safari Update The Afternoon of the 21st we relocated on the 3 young Mbiri lionesses close to Manor house, still unsuccessful in the hunting department. The following morning, they managed to bring down a buffalo close to Xigamba pan, again leaving most of the buffalo for the vultures and hyenas to clean up. The afternoon of the 22d was busy when the other two Mbiri lionesses with the cubs were found hunting at Zebra pan. The following couple of days at Tintswalo Safari lodge was special with some great Elephant and general game sightings. The morning of the 23d, Ntsuntsu male leopard was found close to windy windy. The afternoon, the two Thanda Impi's were located with a buffalo kill close to nveve link. The next morning we all were surprised when the Nharhu pride was found close to the dominant males on Nveve link, haven't seen the cubs for a while and all 10 of them is still in great condition.
