CHEETAH | Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) are the emblematic species of the Pendjari. They are the third largest cats of the park, after lions and leopards, and are one of the most prized sighting by visitors. Although cheetahs don’t belong to the ‘Big Five’, their rarity and beauty make every sighting an unforgettable experience.

Cheetahs are monitored using camera traps. Given their rarity, the park authorities register all cheetah sightings in order to determine their range in the park. In 2017, the density of cheetahs in the Pendjari was estimated using camera-traps. The resulting density was 0.66/100 km², which corresponds to 17 adult cheetahs.
There are 5 sub-species of cheetahs. The sub-species found in the Pendjari (A. jubatus hecki) weighs between 40 and 60 kg
