This species was once listed among the 25 most endangered primates on the planet, because of habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, environmental degradation and other causes. In the Western Ghats, tea and coffee plantations are responsible for loss of prime habitat of this species and many other endemic species. However thanks to the efforts of local governments and NGOs, the species has stabilised and no longer features on that list. "
