There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

IN CASE OF A CATASTROPHIC WAR

Hello everyone,

The latest world news doesn't seem to look to promising even for us, the Homo Sapiens.
So, i was considering in making this parody of a topic.(parody?!just for the lolz, unfortunately the shit is getting almost real).

So, let's break it down, in opinions, tops and  anything that one thinks is useful for us to ''thrive''.

MY TOP SAFEST COUNTRIES IN A PRE CATASTROPHIC WAR:

1. Indonesia -  ( i guess there are this small islands that will not get nuked, or checked, one nuke will get wasted in water so...not worth it)

2. New Zealand (i have friends there?!)

3. Madagascar  (i don't know why....King Julien?).

Thank You!

P.S.   (yes, i have an agenda, in my case,  living in Eastern Europe, i always got the first punch in this ''encounters/world wars'' )

KNP Male lions - Two lions that maybe won't be forgotten.
Posted by: Jack-T - 10-24-2015, 04:46 AM - Forum: Debate and Discussion about Wild Animals - Replies (1)
Hi.

I think that these two lions were something like not-ordinary-lions. Not the "next-door" lions.

Yes , I know , no animal is just an ordinary animal. They all have their personality and character.

But , telling the truth , there are things or moments , that we think that a particular animal had shown something “different”.

"following" them (on internet) the last 3+ years, have noticed things ,  behavior and reacts that made those 2's somehow special lions to me.

So I would like to share all these.

I’m going to make a brief “CV” of them , presenting the mentioned points.

If anyone is interested , plz come in and share your infos or thoughts.

Thanks

Let's post description and possibly links to great big cats documentaries , I suggest we start with more recent and work backwards.
I have just watched " Return of the Giant Killers: Africa's Lion Kings " by BBC Natural World 2015 it is shot in Botswana showing an elephant-hunting pride of lions showing four elephant kills, lion fights, lion cubs killing month old lion cubs!!! Lions killing Buffalo and warthog...a great documentary available through YouTube.

  Who's Been To Africa?
Posted by: Pckts - 10-19-2015, 11:03 PM - Forum: Vacations and Holidays - Replies (91)
After lots of debating between Africa and India, I have decided to go to Africa first.
This decision had a lot to do with my GF and Friend who both seemed to prefer Africa over India. I would of Rather gone to India but its not like I am bummed to be going to Africa instead. Both have been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember and I must see them both.

I have recently spoken with Kanwar and got some great advice and Im hoping to speak to Anjan as well.
We will be going in sept. which is prime migration time but its also very busy there as well, apparently.

Its between

Vic falls + lower Zambezi + south luangwa NP in Zambia for 2 weeks
( canoe through Zambezi river and combine Victoria falls either with lower Zambezi national park in Zambia or mana pools)

or

2 nights in Tarangire, 2 nights in Ngorongoro, 3 nights in Serengeti north, 3 nights in Serengeti Central (maybe do central first and then north) fly to Zanzibar for 3 nights from Serengeti ....

or

Tanzania where you can cover Tarangire, Ngorongoro, North Serengeti for migration and central serengeti for year long active population of big cats ...

These were some of the recommendations I have received thus far and If anybody else here has any others, it would be greatly appreciated.
We are obviously looking to be price conscious and are hoping to be put in touch with a the right operator.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  The Matshapiri Males

MALAMALA (16/10/2015)

It's going to be difficult to sum up today in a short paragraph!! Lions: The Matshapiri pride joined up with the 3 lionesses from the Eyrefield pride who initially showed a lot of hostility towards the Matshapiri lioness. 2 Styx lionesses were near Stwise, a herd of buffalo to their east and further east of that were 2 members of the new coalition of 5 males. Down south we found the Charleston male with the injured jaw and there are reports of a dead male lion around Rocky Crossing.

Star Lizards of the world

Hello all. I'm new here. Hope I'm not posting this in the wrong section.

This Lizard entered my garden yesterday. I was worried as I have two cats and a dog. Surprisingly they were more curious than aggressive or defensive and stayed by my side looking at this beautiful lizard. Can anyone tell me what type of lizard this is? (He was enjoying the place for while but retreated quickly when it started raining.)

Thanks
~Dipro.

  The Charleston Males

A few days ago the Charleston males have returned to Kirkman's Kamp. One of the Charleston male, however, has received an injury to his one canine. Matthew Poole (Ranger) managed to capture these images of the male before they crossed the Sand River. We can assure you all that we have sent the images to the appropriate people and we are waiting for the assessment on his condition.
We all know these are tough males and have made it through many adversaries in the past. But we will try and keep you updated on their condition as much as possible.

About methods, measurements, errors, baits and the art of debating
Posted by: peter - 09-08-2015, 10:51 PM - Forum: Tips, Guides, Tutorial & Technical Problem - Replies (55)
1 - INTRODUCTION

Some time ago, a poster interested in (morphological data of) extinct and extant wild big cats joined our forum. His posts quickly revealed he was both well-informed and able in many respects. A potential asset, it was concluded. WaveRiders, as he called himself, apparently shared this conclusion and underlined his abilities whenever possible. He immediately demanded the tutor part and it has to be said he gave it what he had.

The disadvantage of tutors is they do not treat their pupils on, ehhh, equal terms. They correct them when they take a wrong turn. Another disadvantage is they usually are reluctant to disclose their sources, in this way frustrating every attempt to get to a debate. When it is added Wave quickly extended his territory, one could say the countdown more or less started when he arrived. Not the best way to make friends, but in the end only quality counts. Or does it?

Within a few weeks, the mood changed. When animosity replaced irritation, turbulence had to be expected and we were not disappointed. One of the owners of the forum had to intervene to solve the problem. Although Wave, regarding the owners, had used plenty of honey to prevent problems, the decision wasn't in his favour. He left, but not quite. Posters like Wave only leave when they've scored a late winner. Expecting him to return sooner or later in a different place, a small but tasteful bait was placed. Although it is likely more posters interested in bears and tigers found it, Wave, as expected, was the only one who really went for it.

After a barrage of 8-inch shells, the owner of his new hotel said enough was enough. His last posts were severely edited and the guns were sold. Today it's all quiet on the western front. Other factors also contributed to the armistice. One of these no doubt was the lack of mobilization in the country that was shelled. The reason they didn't respond to the shelling is they knew wars don't solve problems. Wars usually are a continuation of politics. They start when talks end and the other way round, so peace talks it is. If they are to be resumed, however, the participants should agree on the topics.

In this case, all generals agreed on the topics delivered by Wave. Before a hotel with room service in a friendly country will be selected, the bait used by one side needs to be discussed. I am referring to the 'error' in a number of post on tigers and bears in the tiger-extinction thread (2). After agreement has been reached, I propose to start the talks with a debate on methods. Methods to measure wild big cats, I mean (3). We also need to have a look at the reliability of hunting records (4). Same for measurements published by today's biologists (5). Another topic is the interpretation of articles in which morphological parameters of wild big cats feature (6). The most interesting by far would be the noble art of debating (7).

Before we start, I want to make it clear that this thread isn't intended for executions. Wave, as a result of the shelling in August, will be addressed, but the intention is to get to a true debate on the topics mentioned above. One based on arguments only. This means that posts of those interested in something else will be deleted right away. As two are needed to debate, WaveRiders is invited to present his case himself. Here and not somewhere else, I mean. This means that the ban, of which I knew nothing (I was away for some time), will be lifted.

As the shelling was severe and the ones targeted didn't quite agree, the debate could be heated in some respects. But skills are best tested in heated debates. I will definitely contribute in all departments mentioned above. Remember the remark on arguments only and good luck,

Peter.
