I'm currently thinking about working at a zoo, and some zoo like the Minnesota Zoo clearly make good contributions, we have the Columbus Zoo, Cleveland Zoo, Toledo Zoo, Akron Zoo, and Cinninati Zoo. Shoes anyone know which makes the biggest contributions to conservation?
Footage from October 2016 and naming of three Siberian/Amur tiger cubs in Korkeasaari Zoo, Finland. Zoo-keepers put three plushies to tiger enclosure and based on it, which cub takes which plushie they got names. Isla, Iris and Ina. Isla was moved to Poland in September 2018.
Same cubs playing in snow in November 2016. 6 months old.

Their only purpose is to serve as a gene bank for wild species & get people (read: kids) interested in animals. Other than that, working in a zoo your contribution to conservation would be as much as you'd contribute to archeology by working as a museum employee. Zoological Society of London (visit the link, what a coincidence!) is however one of the rare exceptions. ZSL already active in Asiatic lion conservation at Gir & take volunteers/interns. That should be the first choice if you're up for it...

The Cinninati zoo workers transferred their last Sumatran Rhino to Indonesia, where he could pass on his genes to the population. They also have made partnerships with groups like Panthera, were nominated for an animal conservation award, they even have a conservation grant funding to help reintroduce loris's saved from poaching back into Vietnam. I think the Toledo Zoo sends some employees to foreign nations to help with conservation. If that isn't making big contributions, I don't know what is. |
