Vijayarajan Muthu

Dear members, here is the latest update (25th July 2016) on Munna, received from our local sources :
A Male Tiger was sighted yesterday with a cattle kill behind a Resort by locals. Forest Personnel rushed to the spot & also installed camera traps at the site. The Tiger was positively identified from camera trap images as Munna & a team is in place to monitor his movements. He was also sighted by Forest guards later on, making his way back towards the protected area. Munna seems to have crossed Banjar river after his recent escapades & could perhaps head back to the core area.
P.S : Specific location details of his movements haven't been revealed purposefully in this post, for his own safety.

A lost Pattewala. Neither Kisli Pattewala nor Banda or link 7's Pattewala. A mukki male. Maybe Minkur's cub from her 2004 litter - with Munna & Kisli Pattewala? This very big male tiger was never seen again after this date (Dec 2007). Apparently despite his collar no one ever knew what happened to him. Talk about the usefulness of collar. Does anyone recognize him?

(07-19-2016, 09:02 PM)Roflcopters Wrote: Kingfisher male's size is far greater than any Mukki male out there and this cant be contested. when Mundi dadar male was around (Kingfisher's father) he ran Munna out of his territory, had a litter that he guarded for about an year and then he mysteriously vanished after that. (Kingfisher is from the same litter)

Kf defeated Umarpani in jan 2015 and after that they had numerous fights, at the end. neither of them were willing to give up Mukki. same case with Bheema and Link 7, numerous fights between the two but neither of these two were willing to give up. Bheema and Umarpani also had few fights and there was no winner at the end, like i once said. they are fighting to survive and fighting for space,  not to kill each other and Kf/Umarpani are the main reason for Thin Stripe vanishing for good. Kf has been around since mid 2014 and towards the end of 2014, he became a dominant force. since then and now. hes still in Mukki, along with Umarpani, Link 7, Bheema and the saga continues.
@Pckts @Roflcopters @Apollo

Why do you think there is such marked contrast between both stances?

For example, I see that you clearly favour the Kingfisher male, while others are more drawn to Bheema and Umarpani, almost marking off Kingfisher as little more than "fat"(Frankly, I see their point).

So why is it?. Is it just a personal opinion? Or is there evidence to say, "this male is superior" or "these two are the most dominant"?

I'm asking in this straight manner because, honestly, I do the same when analizing rival coalitions or rival dominant leopards, so I want to gain a bit more knowledge in the case of the Tigers.

I can only speak for my self.

 First: kingfishers size
I have seen tigers up close, I know what a 470lb tiger looks like and I know what his brother looks like. To try and determine which is "heavier, longer or taller" would be very hard.
Imagine this but in the wild, seeing different tigers from different angles and distances, then trying to determine if one is larger or smaller than another you have seen in the past, it would be very difficult.
That being said, I tend to take people's word if they have seen both individuals, especially if they frequent the area. Like naren, Vijay, sahil, tharun etc.
I feel like I have seen more speak on Bheema being a very large tiger compared to more speak on kingfisher being a very robust aka (fatter tiger in some people's eyes)
Does this mean that Bheema weighs more than KF, of course not. KF could very easily weigh more, but in terms of frame, the feeling that I get from most who have seen both is that Bheema is probably the "larger" tiger, at least when it comes to body frame.

Second: Dominance
When it comes to dominance, I feel like that is yet to be figured out. We know KF looked dominant over uma but we also know KF gave up the territory they fought over. Was it due to uma's tenacity or just a lack of interest by KF?
Bheema and link 7 also have their own history of fights between the others as well.

Either way, the dominance issue remains to play out and it's very possible that all mukki males could "at times" be more dominant over the others.

Naren Malik

Story of Alpha male -
There was a female in chimta camp in kisli zone who died and left three tiny cubs behind, forest department took and kept them in big enclosure in mukki where they looked after very well and raised beautifully. At the age of 2yrs., when they started making kill in enclosure forest department decided to leave them in open forest. This was the first time in kanha when a tiger was brought up in fenced area and now ready to start a new life in jungle, he was released in open forest with his sister and both were collared. After spending few days in mukki zone this male reached to the place where he was born, what instinct tigers have! Forest department had an eye on this guy and they celebrated when he made his first kill of a wild boar in open forest. But it's always hard for a tiger to get settled in area where other big males rule, he got killed in a territory fight. Hunger taught them how to make a kill but they had no mother who could teach them how to tackle or self defense, when you meet a rival.
His sister was also vanished in buffer and never sighted again, though some forest officials tried hard to track her but couldn’t succeed!

Sahil AK

Chota Munna.
This boy is always special for me right from his birth. he dont have huge body like bheema or Uma male. But he has some qualities like his father munna. he looks so calm while walking but surely dominant male for others. Day by day he is growing, for now he is younger than other males in mukki range. He is still struggling for own territory .. but he has that potantial to rule the forest . He is Just a Good Looking and muscular dominator of Kanha.

A big male tiger from the Mukki area, 03 December 2001. This was certainly one of my all-time best tiger sightings, thanks to the tracking and spotting skills of Tarun Bhati. We had the entire Mukki area to ourselves for an afternoon drive (THAT'S not going to happen anymore), and found this tiger sitting in the jungle with deep wounds on its legs; apparently it had just been in a scrape with another tiger. It finally got up and walked down the road- we followed it for a long time at a respectful distance before it finally left the road and walked up a nullah.

The mysterious social life of Tigers :
While it is a fact that tigers are solitary animals & we seldom get to learn about their societal ties,
Here is an instance of a Male tiger (Innocent boy a.k.a Bhola) spending some quality time with his half-sister Choti Mada (a.k.a Baba Thenga Female) and her young cubs. Innocent boy was born to Minkur Female (sired by Thin Stripe Male) in the litter after Choti Mada was born.
The more we learn about them, the more we realize how little we know about their social lives. Strange are the ways of the tiger ! These set of photos are from Feb 2014.
Thanks a lot Vijayarajan Bhai for such a lovely write-up and Helping to identify such a lovely family & their behaviour :-) :-) ,

Shriram Upadhye

Let me share my recent encounter with a tiger on the occasion of the 'World Tiger Day'.
13th of June. 3 pm. We were in the 'Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve' for our 3rd safari. This year the summer was a bit extended. So most of the waterholes had dried up and water was available only at few reservoirs. Though it was not the peak of summer in central India, the temperature was more than 40° Celsius.
Mr. Magare, a senior guide was with us. A large male tiger was spotted in the morning at a waterhole near the main road. He was again seen sitting in the water about half an hour before we reached there. According to our guide the tiger must be sitting in the shadow of a big tree nearby and shall definitely come back within the next two hours. So he asked our driver to take our gypsy in the Telia dam area for a round. We came back to the spot after about one and half hours. The tiger hadn't appeared. Our guide decided to keep waiting for him there. He was quite confident. All other vehicles went to other sites. Only one stayed back with us. It was a long patient wait. After about 40 minutes or so a peacock gave a call in the nearby jungle behind the waterhole. Then a sambhar deer started shouting. "The tiger has started moving " our guide said. We started looking at the waterhole with utmost concentration. There was a pin drop silent. There was excitement in the air. And the people in the nearby gypsy noticed a movement beyond the bamboo thicket on the left side. They all were pointing at that direction. Not a sound was uttered. I could hear my heart sounds loud and clear!
Everybody was on their toes.
"Look there!" "A big male tiger!" Our guide whispered. And yes!,he was arriving. Very silently. He wasn't in a hurry. With his majestic stride and confidence of the king he came out in the clearing. He must have seen us long time ago. He paused. Gave us a sharp glance and entered the small waterhole. Immersing the hind parts of his body in the water. Not bothered of our presence. Cooling off himself. I was clicking all the time. I have seen tigers in the jungle many times in the past. But this time was special. Our guide had predicted his arrival and we were ready for him. Yes , there was a chance he might have gone elsewhere. But this chance was worth taking. And there he was!
A very large and powerful male tiger with his aristocratic aura majestic looks confident gait and piercing deadly stare, capable of sending a chill of ultimate fear down the spine of the onlooker!
"He is called 'Bajarang' because of his powerful built and fearless nature. He is about 4 to 5 years old , in his prime. He has taken over this area last year defeating the older king." Our guide said. He sat there for 15 to 20 minutes. Dozing most of the times except an occasional look in our direction. By now some fifteen vehicles had gathered there and few more were pouring in.
He got up. Silently. And started moving back to the jungle. Few monkeys saw him moving and started shouting. He waited for a moment. Gave a fleeting glance behind and disappeared in the jungle.
A routine visit to a waterhole for him. A life time thrilling experience for us!
