There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Nara Simhan
Aroma

Basmati rice , a long grained rice which grows in Indian-Subcontinent region is known for its aroma, some 10 times higher other non-basmati varieties. The strong aroma and long-grain make the Basmati a most exotic rice variety, which has become synonymous to Biriyani.

---------
That was a large male , we saw in the last day of our Safari in Dudhwa National Park. The Tiger was inside a bush, Initially. After a short wait it appeared on the path.Slowly it started to walk and for every few yards it would smell the bushes or tree barks.

Its January, also a good time to mate.
Tiger started to mark the territory by urinating on the trees.
The marking was happening in more than few trees on the way.The aroma serves two purpose - an announcement for the female Tigers and to tell other Males that territory is occupied.

The aroma, actually is not pungent(unlike human's).
It is close to Aroma of Basmati rice.

Aroma of basmati is due to the chemical compound
2-Acetyl-1-Pyrroline. The urine of the Tiger also has the same compound.Few other mammal also has the same chemical compound and similar aroma .
Perhaps, next time if you get an opportunity check it

That's a Sauraha male tiger of Chitwan, This and other few images of this male tiger is the first ever automatic camera shot of a tiger taken by innovative pressure plate technique designed by tiger researcher/naturalist Charles McDougal of Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge, this image was taken during 1980's and is famous in many magazines all over Nepal. Thanks a lot. You know how these government websites are!
I had seen your image of Sauraha before, but not that one i posted. Side by side the similarity is obvious.

There was a time when he used to look really large to me...
