There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

"Spent some time with hairy belly Matimba this morning! Although he’s looking old and skinny, he still had a full stomach and was resting happily under a bushwillow in the rain." Photo by Chene Wales-Baillie

Will hb have anything to do with the othawa pride and cubs now or will he be strictly nomadic?

Who knows, even in December before the tumbela takeover it looked like he was struggling to keep up with them, and was getting left behind by the pride.

I don't have high hopes for Hairy Belly rejoining with the Ottawa youngsters, or rather I have doubts about if he can be useful for them. I can see them not chasing each other from carcasses and rubbing heads if they find each other, but we don't even know if they would look for him and all should keep low profile and not callling at this poing. We don't  how HB feeds himself, how mobile he is and whether he can still hunt a bit, he might be lacking speed and/or power necessary and might be mostly scavenger by know. He could still be help numbers in roaring, but the sub-adults are too young to try to take over a territory and not confident enough yet to start roaring. As the oldest of them, the "Prince Ottawa" needs to wait for his brothers to grow, otherwise he is alone, they are some time from that, time Hairy Belly most likely won't have to be even around when those 3 would be ready to something other than surviving be keeping low profile (or 4, their sister could hopefully be accepted back into the pride, the closer to mating age, the more Tumbelas would like her). They can wonder into any nomadic individuals meanwhile, even if they stay put between Ottawa and Mhangenis, with unpredictable results, who knows what will happen, really. Just hoping they would not catch mange.

Birmingham cubs in the Timbavati riverbed at Ngala in November 2007. Whisker markings look like HB to me. Image by Andy Goodman.

Great find. Somebody should make a wallpaper of HB's circle of life from Cub, to prime male lion to old nomad.

So, Savanna Lodge pointed out that they believe that Hairy Belly passed away as he hasn't been seen for over a month.. Will we accept that or wait a bit more??
