Maps of Sabi Sand Coalitions Males and Prides

Hi All,
My first post. I got hooked up watching lions, leopards, cheetahs about May this year (2021). Especially lion dynamics is interesting, and I thought about a map to make more sense of it. Just now found this thread.
I wonder if it would be of interest to you, if anybody would like to contribute to create an interactive map? On the attached image is an early version / proof of concept, locations etc are wrong, sorry. Only an image, as haven't deployed it yet at this stage as a webpage, thus only a screenshot from my computer.

It would be an open source project, so anybody could use it on their website or develop in a different way.
- zoom in/out
- when you hoover over the icon, name shows
- when clicked, a card with some information shows up (website/directions just a place holder)
- at the moment male lions and notable females could have an icon, while prides are indicated by (now pink) circle

At the moment it would be technically tricky (my first map!) to draw exact area pride/males reside, so just markers around the middle of the areas.
What exactly would show up in the card, what icons etc, all up for a discussion.

What kind of contribution?
- Longitude/lattitude numbers to pin up an icon on the map
- names of males, coalitions and prides and other information about them
- advice

An interactive map would be more usefull and easier than the current methods I think. Though perhaps just focus on Sabi as a try out?

The map is wrong and various coalitions and prides of Sabi Sands are missing. If you want I can tell you the prides and coalitions of Sabi Sands.

Yes, I know it's inaccurate/wrong. I made a note on the map itself.

All the help to make it better is very welcomed!

If I may ask, where have you gotten confirmation of Talamati cubs?  I have only heard suspicions and never any sightings.

I’m only tracking 11 cubs with the Styx Pride.

I’m also tracking 9 Talamati Sub-Adults.

I also would like to add that two of the a Nkuhuma lionesses (ridge nose and amber eyes) have splintered from the main Pride and have spent the last two or more months with the PCYMs.   In a similar fashion that two (maybe 3) of the Talamati lionesses have been away with Imbali/S8 male.

Lastly, one lone lioness, sister to N’waswishaka is now taking residence in lion sands and has 3 cubs, suspected to be sired by the S Avocas

@Calvitoo

This is great! Do you think you can find locations (longitude latitude)? As I have to pin lions and prides somewhere on the map.
Maybe also a link to a youtube video?

I've never yet been to South Africa and it's quite challenging for me to figure out locations. If you will right-click on the place in google maps, it should show the location, if you left-click on the numbers, it will copy to clipboard and you can later paste it elsewhere.

It's also possible to cooperate directly on github. Even if you cannot write the code, it's possible to discuss things in the 'issues' part of the project. Or to update data files (lions.csv and prides.scv).

Cheers!

I agree with you on everything what you've written here. Several contradictory statements by Calvitoo, I'm afraid.
I'm sorry that I left many things I had to do it quickly, sorry.

No worries, just trying to flush out all the details and reconcile what we all have.   I certainly don’t claim to have 100% of all sightings so I always like to ask.  I always appreciate the dialogue

There is definitely a dense congestion of lion prides and male lions in certain areas of this map.  Some areas have relatively few lions at all up in Kruger.

If you're referring to the Northern Kruger and even in this map then you're fairly right. The area is dominated by dense mopani and grazing herds are less than what would be found south of the Olifants River so pride territories are larger and density lower. That said, it's also traversed by fewer roads, is less busy than Satara downwards and does not have as many private concessions as the Central and Southern regions so information is sparse.

There are more male lions, and prides, in the areas west of the main tar north of Satara going past Olifants, Letaba, Mopani and Shingwedzi, I have seen them in the past, but the road network is limited especially as you get north of the Olifants. This map is great work but it seems that there are 3 coalitions or territories in the Kruger Proper in the entire region from the H7 to Punda Maria west of the main tar running north. That's impossible and to my mind purely a lack of information flow.

Here is new updated map of Sabi Sands since September of last year :

*This image is copyright of its original author

A lot have changed in this half a year , prob most turbulent period of SS in the past few years.

We witnessed biggest shift in males dynamics since 2018 with Nws males overthroning and taking BBoys territory and pride in late 2021, era of 6 yrs dominance of BBoys came to an end. Tinyo disappeared around that time, it is not know if it was related to Nws or not, last standing birmingham, Nhenha, went nomadic.

Up in the north things also changed , few adult females breakaway from Nkuhuma and Talamati prides and went on next chapter with new males , 2 Nkuhumas went west in Singita with 2 new dominant males in this area , Plains Camp boys, while 3 Talamatis went north with Imbali/s8 male. DM Avoca as lone male lost grip on his territory and pride in meantime , he prob didnt get accepted back to his brothers, so he went nomadic and now roams Sabi Sands alone.

In this period we lost few lions like Bboy Tinyo, Scar Tumbela, Smudge Nosed Kruger male (not confirmed but not seen since September), Tsalala female, Ximhungwe subadult female and few more subadults and cubs.

Very informative map, thanks. How did the Ximhungwe subadult female die??
