Btw just seen a post saying that’s actually Nkuhuma Male, must have lost quite a bit of his mane at the top again cos I was sure this was Khanya. Just thought Khanya’s chest had recently darkened a lil bit but Yh it’s most likely Nkuhuma Male.

Both Talamati YMs were named but I don’t think it’s necessarily official to the point where rangers and whatnot refer to these same names, more so just fans
Khanya meaning light and that’s the younger male
Dzwihala meaning dark and that’s the older male, also referred to as Dark Mane Jr by myself and many others

Kambula males and sister

Think this is one of the Nkuhuma YMs, one referred to as Chela’s son

To be honest, these must be some of the most creative names i've ever seen when it comes about the lions in Sabi Sand.
Unlike the Masai Mara, the guides/rangers make no effort to name the lions there. I think the only lions i remember having 'original' names were Makhulu, the 4 BBoys and i don't know of others of which they were possibly also named by mere enthusiasts who follow animals on the internet.

Totally agree and I hope the rangers stick with the names because it just seems so fitting rn. I was actually a little surprised hearing one of the BDMs in Manyeleti being named Makhulu, not that I want to necessarily gatekeep names but I feel as if Makhulu isn’t a name that can just be handed out. Obviously the meaning of the name refers to big or impressive but it means way more than that to me anyways. I don’t follow lions like that in Manyeleti but it would have to be some special male for me to even consider naming him Makhulu, especially as the only two Makhulus I’ve known to exist were Mak Sr (West Street Male) and Makhulu Mapogo who are both seen as legends.

These Talamati names, I'm pretty sure, were given by fans, I doubt rangers would use them.

I particularly don't like using these fan names.

It is near unavoidable when more generic sort of names are used to describe characteristics, such as Dark Mane, Mohawk, Mr. T, even Kinky Tail or Snip Tail. But, I do agree, when it comes to the more specific names of legendary cats, such as Lolparpit and Makhulu, those should not be tossed around so easily.

If they become successful, guides will most likely refer to them as either these names or make up new ones, smaller and bigger Talamati male isn’t sustainable because Khanya is younger and could look just as big and dark. I certainly don’t want to see a name like Blondie being passed out to Khanya.

I agree and disagree.

There wouldn't be names made by 'fans' if the guides named the lions properly instead of referring to characteristics and repetitive nicknames. They are under no obligation to do this, but if they did, it would be good for easier ID and for the called 'fans' not to have to create names i guess? Idk.
Guess they are not doing it, anyways in Mara the lions have much greater identification

I understand but I kind of disagree. The characteristics are great, for me Floppy Ear is an example of a good functional name, it's one thing with Nchile and Mandevu in Manyeleti as they re refered as such all the time on their videos and naturally on the internet everywhere as well. But I particularly have problems with the Talamati Young Males names, not exactly with the names themselves, but I coudln't remember which one is which fro a long time as they are used so seldomly :) So for me Dark Mane and Blonde/Light Mane or something like that works well :)

@KM600 Younger/older works just as well as bigger/smaller. Though I'm not saying you or anyone else shouldn't use them if you want to, but for me particularly I prefer to only use these names when I see guides also using them.

Even if you go by official names, guides are usually not in sync, take Nhenha for example, he and his brothers were named by the northern lodges. He was one of the most famous, followed and loved lions out there. Yet I remember a friend of mine asking a western guide about him at the time of the drama with the PCM fight, and the guide was like "who?" and my friend had to specify "the older Birmingham male".

Not only this, but many guides, rangers and lodges don't like to use individual names, like some western lodges. Leopard Hills is one of them, they have said many times that their policy is to avoid using individual names. They'd say "short-maned Mapogo", "youngest Mapogo", or "elder Mapogo", or "the one with the dreadlock on his chest" instead of using their names.

I think Mala Mala is the same, they also don't use individual names.

So I find it unlikely SS guides and rangers will start using these Talamati fan names, or even giving them some other names.

@Ngonya They may not name them for a variety of reasons. For Leopard Hills, for example, was that they thought giving individual names was somehow disrespectful towards the lions and they rather prefer to identify them in some other way.

Like I said earlier, I've no problem with people using fan names, but particularly I prefer to avoid doing that. And I also have no problem with how SS deals with the naming situation, in fact although I get why most people find it cool, I also find exaggerated and unnecessary how literally every lion, even subadults sometimes get official native names in Mara, for me it makes harder to follow instead of easier.
