I wonder if it was the arrival of the Mbiri/ Nharu males that sent the Orpen Males south. These young males are looking in great condition and I’m not sure if Junior can fight them off alone anymore.

Also, they mentioned Red Road and Orpen Males teaming up.... but I feel like that’s not very likely. I don’t think the Orpen males would accept those cubs with the Nharu females long term.

The future for those cubs is concerning, for sure. While I somehow doubt RRM will join a coalition until he loses his pride, I do agree a joint venture with him and the Orpens would be a perfect fit, especially given Buddy's current condition.

The lion dynamics at somehow are a bit crazy at the moment, I often think and I would like think that I wasn't the first  on thinking about that if the Orpen males someday took-over the Nharu pride will kills the RRM cubs but seems that they did not wanted do it. At least for now. The lions behavior surprising me every day

Indeed my friend, we have seen some truly strange things happen recently, that if nothing else has been a reminder of just how little we really understand about these beautiful creatures.

The Mbiri male with smallest mane looks very much like Shaka Mbiri regarding face structure. He also has already quite a few battle marks. I wonder if he will grow into same kind of brute Shaka is.

"These boys have a long way to go still"

I do not think they have really long way ahead of them. I wouldn't even be suprised at all if they would try some takeover in the coming weeks althrough they might also wait couple of months more.

I recall the Orpens mating alongside RRM with the Nharus back when they came into heat.  It could be that some of those many cubs belong to the Orpens and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if so.  RRM got to take over the Nharus because the Orpens had newborn cubs of their own with the Koppies Pride and decided to abandon their bid to take over the Nharus.  I think if it weren't for that, they would have stuck around and eventually drove RRM away.....I mean a pride of 6 is tempting to just suddenly lose interest in.  But good for them it didn't happen considering that Buddy is too ill to help Junior now and they'd have to tend to 15+ cubs; since they cannot even stick to the Koppies with only 7 (now 5), it's just as well they fled back home and left RRM alone.

But, the going will get tough if even half of those cubs are male once they reach 1 to 2 years and hog all the kills.  The mayhem will be enormous.  One pride male and 6 females to handle them all will be a test of their patience and skills.  Even the Kambulas with 6 females and 2 males cannot keep together now that the cubs have become subs....plus, additional cubs have arrived recently.

I wouldn't look too much into this situation with Orpen males and Nharus..

I think that Orpens just found Nharus on a kill, and tried to steal from them, they eventualy chased RRM, but females know Orpen males from before, so they didn't get intimidated, and even fight back by report..

It was prob only just a kill steal attempt and not takeover attempt, because they where feeding alongside RRM aswell, so cubs where not in that much danger, especially because Orpens know Nharus and mated with them before..

Also theres no reason for Orpens to pursuit Nharu pride, because they have plenty of females in estrus im Mbiri Pride..

As for Orpen males, they are very "loose" coalition.. In 3 or so yrs of their dominance, they interacted with pretty much all prides in Manyeleti, except Talamatis.. Thats a lot for that time and only 2 males.. Unfortunately that style will left them with very few offspring in the end i think..

Of course! The Orpen males have been in Manyeleti for the past three years or so. As you have mentioned above, my friend, They have interacted the majority of the prides in Manyeleti except the Talamati pride. To be honest, that's good and talks about them, As an powerful duo, But now, If we talk about their offspring in those prides they have been just successful with the Skorro pride of all those prides mentions above. In my personal opinion that's a low ratio of success considering their time in the area. As well with the Koppies pride,In the past years the majority of Orpen offspring in the Koppies pride wasn't had success. Very sad

"but females know Orpen males from before, so they didn't get intimidated, and even fight back by report."

Females probably stayed on the kill only because they had small cubs near by and with them not being very mobile, famales had their retreat option limited. Orpens most likely would kill those cubs if there wouldn't be females around to defend those cubs. At least one of them even tryed it seems, but was chassed by the females.

"to be honest, that's good and talks about them, As an powerful duo"

Not at all. They faced no competition in Manyeleti so far beside lone RRM. Just about any duo would do equally well in such circumstances.

I understand what you're saying, But I should point out that I don't talk about the competition. I talking about to the prides that the Orpen males have interacted with

Well... interacting with few vacated prides doesn't make them "powerfull duo".

Well that's your opinion and I respect it at the 100%. In my personal opinion they're a powerful duo without a doubt though not very successful coalition in the Manyeleti area

I am not even saying that they are not as this is a different think. I mean that they interacted with few vacated prides doesn't make them powerfull duo.

Sad News comes from Sabi Sands.
The Orpen male (Junior) was recently seen on Jacana Camp on  Buffelshoek with a serious injury on his mouth
Very interesting how far south  he is! Could even be that he was been bitten by a snake!! Junior is 8 years old (Born in April 2012) really sad see him in this shape.

Some more photos of Junior the Orpen male,This was taken today at 10amish...
Looks like a snake bite? The drooling and swelling are symptoms of it.
