There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Lions in West-Africa

In the Senegal River Delta, on the opposite side of the Senegal River as the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary in Senegal, is Diawling National Park in southwest Mauritania, where a lion was shot in 1970: https://www.ramsar.org/sites/default/fil...07cs12.pdf

What's interesting about Mauritania is that it isn't just considered a West African country (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications...os/mr.html), but also a Maghrebi or Northwest African country. Northwest Africa is the region of Morocco, Algeria and the Atlas Mountains (https://books.google.com/books?id=VLjafe...ia&f=false), and consequently where the Atlas lion used to be.

@BorneanTiger

Do you think that there are any surviving lion populations in the sahara desert?

Same here... As i said, they look like crossbreds to me.
Actually more like adolescent Asiatic lions with African face & sometimes, body shape. Adult asiatics tend to have more mane usually.

With some gir lion features they have many clear African lion traits too. Especially the shape of the skull.
Even if the two are of one genetic clade, make differences are bound to exist as they live thousands of kilometres apart!

I may be able to find some.

This two look like they're hybrids. If you've seen a lot of Asiatic lions, then you can tell that these don't have the "look"...

I don't know. Considering that lions inhabit the deserts or xeric savannahs of Southwest Africa, including the Kalahari region, it's not impossible for lions to live in deserts like those of the Sahara and Arabia (https://archive.org/stream/naturalistsli...+of+Arabia), but as with Arabian lions, African lions are considered to be extinct in the Sahara: http://ens-newswire.com/2013/12/05/sahar...xtinction/

They have common characteristics  (because they both live in dry environments) but they don't resemble each other. I don't know how to describe that but I find that the west african lions have clearly the mouth of African lions (better built).

Mostly because they belong to the same subspecies, hence in a similar environment they would expose to many common traits.

The West African lions genetically cluster with the historical lions from Southeast Europe/North Africa/West Asia, also the Gir lions.
