There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Owens Boys, the dominant males at Kalahari Plains.

Soulmates of the Kalahari.

The only thing in the world that could pull these guys apart would be a lioness in oestrus; yet even that would only be for a few days until they find each other again and spend intimate moments of bonding, as if apart for years. The bond grows from strength to strength as they protect their territory from intruders, sometimes younger and stronger, until eventually they are prepared to die for their land and the offspring they have created and nurtured as part of their one and only purpose in life: survival of the species.

'Amazing story told by a great ranger !!! (Must read)
Never the same day in the world of rangers but some days stand out and we always live to tell those stories.
It was so dry that year and most of the water holes were completely dry. Save for very few which were to be shared by everyone, even the worst enemies.... buffalos and lions.
We got to this water hole and a few buffaloes were there, very much hesitating to drink, heads lifted high and circling around the water hole.
I switched off my landrovers engine, trying to use all our senses. I could hear a low pitch contact call of a lion.
In the center of this muddy water hole was a little, helpless cub stuck in the mud and the mother helplessly trying to call her cubs out danger.
I could see a cloud of dust, more and more buffaloes were coming and the situation was getting more dangerous for the cub.
We drove in the herd of buffaloes to sparse them out and I called at the same time to other Rangers of the lodge for help.
With so much fear we went for rescue, the other ranger responsible for my safety, you never mess around with a lion cub, especially not when the mother is around, that's the golden rule.
I was able to lift the cub from the mud to a safe place and it slowly walked into the bushes where mum was still calling the cub.
This was a very risky and scary moment for all of us and you could see the fear in our eyes.
This special moment happened about 7 year ago and now this former little cub is king of the jungle now and produced little lion cubs himself.
I am aware that Mother Nature should take care of herself but around this time the lion population was degreasing rapidly in the Matetsi Reserve so we made a decision with our harts.
I am happy that our friend and ranger Vusa Sibanda shared this amazing story with us.'

Lovers at Dusk (Black Mane Lion& Lioness)

We followed this mating pair the entire day and managed to get some beautiful shots of them mating, images that I will share with you later. They eventually decided to take a brake, lying down together in the grass, just staring into nothing. The wind blowing the golden black mane of the male towards the back and the beautiful sunset is what made this image special to me. View in full view to appreciate. Credit Bruna Menthrup-Nortje
