#3 : LION BEFORE STORM - SITTING PROFILE, MASAI MARA, 2006.

I try to photograph wild animals in the same way that I would photograph a human being. The difference is that I have to wait for the animals to present themselves, to ‘pose’, for their portrait. In this way, I am attempting to show the animals as sentient creatures not so different to us (although frequently they are better than us...but I digress).

Just as a portrait photographer might be captivated by a striking, characterful face on the street, so I'm drawn to a particular animal that I want to photograph.

So it was with this lion. I spent seventeen straight days with him. Waiting. But all he did was sleep - hour after hour, day after day -under a boring cloudless blue sky.

Finally, on the evening of the eighteenth day, a monumental storm rolled in. Just ahead of the storm came an incredibly powerful wind. The moment that the wind hit the lion, like a freight train, he sat up, facing into the wind, smelling the game on the air. After all these days spent in each other’s company, he was oblivious to me taking photos so close to him.

Shot as always on medium format black and white film without telephoto or zoom, the photo has shifting planes of focus that occur in camera at time of shooting, using a very crude poor-man’s version of a tilt shift lens. Some think they can achieve this in Photoshop, but that’s a physical impossibility - this ‘effect’ can only be achieved in camera.

Two years ago I was camping in the khwai area when we heard lion activity and loud roaring not far from the campsite 4am in the morning ....still in our sleeping outfit my guide and I woke up and found out there were 2 unidentified male lions walking 40 meters behind our tents heading for the riverside where they sat down and waited while the sun came up looking in the direction of the other side ready to plan a pride take over.

Well....here's a guy you don't want to mess with while being on foot. One of the former dominant Savuti male lions. This huge lion was the most massive of the five, pure muscle and strenght often used by the pride as a counter weight while taking down buffaloes and sometimes elephants.

Within 48 hours of landing in Africa for the first time in 2008, I was in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Upon leaving a week later, I knew I would come back. This September I visited the park for the third time, and this self-drive paradise still has a place in my heart as the source of my Africa fever.

Whether your favourite safari experience involved wildlife, landscapes, camping or 4×4 challenges, the Kgalagadi will fulfil all your expectations. A bit of patience is all you need to enjoy a wide variety of animals roaming the beautiful dunes and riverbeds. It is one of the best places for self-drivers to observe predators, especially the big cats, canids and birds.

Life revolves around the waterholes situated at intervals along the gravel roads crossing the park. These are the places where the animals come to quench their thirst. There is a natural order for the animals queuing for a drink – when the lions arrive everyone else gives way, and falcons and opportunistic jackals keep the hundreds of nervous birds quenching their thirst on their toes.

The land which these animals call home is endowed with a stark beauty, especially so when bathed with the golden light of sunrise and sunset, or ethereal moonlight.  Camping under the crystal-clear starry Kgalagadi skies with a chorus of barking geckos is an unrivalled experience. On the map it looks like there are very few roads, but the scenery changes frequently if one ventures far enough. The main roads are easy to drive, but the dune roads and trails give a chance to hone one’s driving skills in slightly more challenging settings.

It’s not easy to capture the soul of the Kgalagadi, as it has to be experienced with all the senses, but I hope this video does justice to this unique place.



The wilderness of the Kgalagadi is best summed up by the roaring lions. Nothing gives you goosebumps like hearing lions roar in the night from your unfenced camp. And long may they continue to do so!

The park is 38,395 km² in size and is a vast wildlife reserve in the Kalahari Desert region of the Northern Cape in South Africa and Botswana, bordering Namibia to the west.

Its not easy to displace the ruling Lion Brothers of Nsefu Sector in South Luangwa Valley but when unruly young ellie bull tuskers decide to break the party, they had the whole pride scurrying for cover and the last 2 brothers held off as long as possible before they joined the rest of the pride in the bushes too.
