There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

Fantastic, and people think that you can just go to the forest and see big cats.
It doesn't work like that, you have to anticipate, maneuver, listen for alarm calls, etc.
And even then, nothing is guaranteed.

is there a way to distinguish between male and female lion cubs, are there characteristics in their face that can tell the difference?

Normaly, among the cubs and teens lions, the lionesse's ears back has a striped black coat. Very usefull too when, fully adults, they are hunting ! They are able to see and distinguish each other from far away...

Rubbing heads. Not only a way of greeting, but also to change pheromones, a way that lions communicate by.

Each on their own mission! Lion and elephant often get in each others way at the waterhole, which leads to some interesting and fun images. Here the bull is after a cow and the lion after a hyena.

Heinrich Neumeyer Wildlife and Landscape Photography:
"The Solo one..."

Through the odd 36 years of Pilanesberg's existence, there has been many a lion which traversed within its boundaries.
I've have been privileged to see most of them on my visits to the Park, and each time still infuses feelings of elation and merriment.
Seeing the tawny coats from afar or right next to your vehicle is always equally thrilling.
Hearing their ear-splitting roars as they purloin the silence is still the most iconic sound of Africa to me.
I have followed many of them as they journeyed their lives, from frightful fluffy balls of fur to full maned, proud and powerful kings.
I have seen them at their proudest moments, and sadly, also at their final feeble fates.
Yet I would try to remember them at their best, where they would enthrall me with their majestic presence and on occasions pierce into my soul with their ambered yellow eyes.
Recently I had yet another glorious sighting of one of the iconic males who is all grown up...
Solo...
This well known male is frequently seen close to Kwa Maritane, on Tshepe Drive.
Being on his own since a young age, he was given the name of Han Solo (courtesy of a couple of Star Wars fanatical Guides), and since it's been shortened to Solo.
This male is surely one for the ages and already he is regularly braving the central areas of Pilanesberg where the "Black Rhino" Males and Dispersed Males / Spooners are also often seen.
Here he was standing in the late afternoon breeze... closing his eyes every now and again as it blew through his mane.
Contemplating the scents and sounds of the area, and going forward regardless.
A new journey and story beckons, and I can't wait to read this one!

It was 7:30am on 8 June 2014 on a cold winters morning(it was -11 degrees celsius during the night) at Polentswa in the KTP.

Out of nowhere he came to drink water. Still young and very unsure of himself.

Then on 6 November 2015 at 7:43 am, a year and half later, he came from exactly the same direction as on 8 June 2014(7:30am). (See post on 23 December 2015)

This time with much more confidence and presence. He is probably the main man at Polentswa now after rumors had it that the three brothers have moved south in the direction of Bedinkt about a year ago.
Hopefully they haven't run into Bundu and his partner, which is the main guys in that area(Bedinkt and Kwang), because they really are two mean buggers.
Further if I'm correct he might be the proud farther of the naughty two sons of the lady of Polentswa(few posts back), because if he wasn't he probably would have tried to kill them by now.
