The jaguars of the Pantanal are absolutely amazing. Nonstop action. In three days we’ve seen three kills - caiman crocodile, otter and then this capybara. Unlike most African cats they are active through the day, often swimming or wading down the rivers or creeks hunting.

On the move! Though I’m now home from ten days in the Pantanal with these most awesome of cats, the jaguar or onça pintada as the Brazilians know them, and staying still for a few days before I set off in search of more spotted cats at #Singita next week, I’m still totally in awe and humbled by these amazing predators. This is a species that until relatively recently was never photographed in the wild and yet today in the Pantanal multiple sightings every day are possible! And not just possible, they are extremely photogenic and most appear totally relaxed in close proximity to us and our cameras as we follow them by boat as they hunt along the rivers and creeks of the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetlands.

For the #10yearchallenge we present to you two handsome male #jaguars that Panthera staff have been tracking for the past decade in the Jofre region of the Brazilian #Pantanal. On the top, we have Trapézio, named for his trapezoid-shaped rosette and first captured on camera trap 10 years ago when he was nine years old. Now he’s 19 and still a dominant jaguar, which speaks well of the habitat and prey quality available in this northern Pantanal paradise. On the bottom is Holyfield, so named because of his torn ear. At 15 years old, he is also still a defender of a large territory and may have even fought Trapézio in the past. Amazingly, however, our camera trap research revealed that these two unrelated bruisers (confirmed by DNA analyses) put down their gloves and formed an unusual coalition. This is an important key to understanding the social lives of these otherwise secretive and solitary #cats.

@Pckts :

About #203: 19 years old and still a dominant jaguar ? Unbelievable !

If I understand well, these two jaguars are two veterans joining together their forces in order to survive... It's remarkable ! Amazing to see how under the circumstances pressure, two solitary cats are able to modify their lifestyle !

A massive male Jaguar gives us a full sense of his size as he stretches out while scent-marking his territory. It’s difficult to truly appreciate the size of the cats by looking at a picture. Try imagine a leopard weighing in at the same weight as a lioness! Yup, that’s right! Crazy but true!!
