                      POST FROM 2014

On February 11th the Onçafari Project team witnessed a totally unusual scene among Onça-Pintadas (jaguars in portuguese), more than one Onça consuming and sharing the same food.

We found a calf slaughtered by a jaguar in the morning. In the late afternoon, we parked our Mitsubishi Triton about 60 meters from the carcass and waited in order to observe some jaguar getting close to feed.

After 30 minutes of waiting, we spotted the first Onça, a baby of about 9 months old, who did not approach the carcass, it just watched us.

Young Nusa cub, shes Teorema's youngest daughter

After another 10 minutes, we observed something coming from the forest right next to us, a very known male Onça in the area “Xavier”, who came very close to the young female cub, he sniffed her scent and then he went to feed on the carcass. This type of interaction between an adult male and a cub has never been recorded here at the Caiman Ecological Refuge.

Xavier adult male Onça-Pintada.

After eating for more than 20 minutes, Xavier lied down at about 10 meters away from the carcass, giving all signs of satisfaction. If it were with humans we would say that it was time for the “ciesta”. Shortly thereafter, we saw something coming out of the woods very close to the cub a female monitored by radio-collar, Teorema. Only after she appeared we figured out who the female cub was. It was Nusa, daughter of Teorema.

Teorema and Nusa. Mother and Daughter

Watching her mother lying on the edge of the forest, Nusa went to the carcass and ate for more than 25 minutes. When Nusa finished eating, Teorema started eating parts of the same carcass. All of this occurred about 10 meters of distance from the adult male Onça Xavier.

Xavier lied down after having meal.

These behaviors are at the very least quite unusual and somewhat unknown to the scientific and popular circles. Most common records indicate that Onças are animals with solitary habits. Viewing three jaguars sharing the same food, even though each one awaiting their turn is something truly remarkable and unforgettable.

A certain hierarchy was observed but without signs of threat or hostility. For this reason the Onçafari Project team questions possible degrees of kinship between these Onças-Pintadas.

Did the adult male tolerate the cub only for her being his daughter and carrying his genes?

Did the female accept being close to the male with her daughter because they are partners?

''Possibly'' father and daughter together.

Now the Onçafari Project team works to try to discover answers about these behaviors by trying to track these animals more frequently using as tools the daily search for trails, records in camera traps and sightings.

I've said it for a while now but collaring needs to be removed from common practice.
So many animals have died from the capture or recently following it.

''On my last safari to the Pantanal in Brazil we interrupted this huge male Jaguar named Shaka, after the African warrior king, while mating. As you can see he was not impressed with us but my guests found it incredibly exciting. Who wouldn’t? . . . ''
