No, this is normal that females mate with all parties who are competing for territory and them.

This way if they give birth to cubs, neither males will kill the cubs.

OK, that does make sense.  I still think something has to shake out here.

These animals are very smart, I've watched documentaries where lionesses even pretend to be in estrus and mate with intruder lions in order to protect cubs and youngsters.

(01-26-2024, 06:52 AM)Mapokser Wrote: @Ngonya yeah, big coalitions generally aren't so slow, especially when 3 of the members are 5.5yo.

Majingis roared on one morning for the first time on Mapogo territory and 2 lions were dead by the night, less than 2 months later Rasta disappeared and PB almost died.

WSM crossed from Kruger and killed the 2 dominant males in a single fight.

Selatis had a couple of serious clashes with the Mapogo and 2 big fights in 1 month, almost killing PB and then killing Mr.T, and that was 4v3 and only S1 looked like an impressive and well developed male.

Even the Birminghams once they actually challenged the Matimbas, managed to oust them for good quickly.

Meanwhile the Kambulas are older than all of these guys, have challenged already and are roaring for months, but don't seem interested in actually hunting the BDM down.

And it's not like they're facing a tough duo like S.Matimbas and Mlowathi.
The situation becomes more interesting when you notice the dominant males the coalitions you mentioned had to face.
Mlowathi/Mapogo, Matimba... While the Kambulas have the easiest rivals: The Black Dam males. Yet they are still struggling to deal with them.

Not all lions are the same.

Also i wouldnt say struggling, as neither coalition are taking any decisive moves looks like, besides roaring.

@Mapokser

Comparisons like this are uselles, not all lions are the same and in same situation.

Just recently, Nkhulus (much larger coalition) where also in similar position to Kambulas, they where struggling to deal with 2 S.Avocas and Gijimas for half a year or more, but eventually prevailed over S.Avocas.

Kambulas are only contesting in the north for what, 1-2 months?

yeah thats true. But again, look who they were dealing with.
Southern Avocas, not even aging at that time, at most at the end of their peak. One of, if not the most experienced coalition at that time.
also, Nkhulu were younger at that time than Kambulas are today (almost 6 years old now).

The two Black Dam have barely established themselves in the north and already have to deal with Kambula, a coalition of which at least 3 members are practically at their physical peak. Even with everything in favor of the Kambula, the BDM continue to mate with the Nkuhuma and both coalitions just a few KM away from each other because those with the advantage have not taken explosive/decisive action for now
But you're right, all different coalitions of different lions. It's not fair to compare. But nothing changes the fact that until now, this has been a soft takeover.

@Tr1x24 Yes, that's the point of the discussion, not all lions are the same, the Kambulas are pretty slow considering their age and numbers.

Yes, Nkhulus were in a similar situation, I also thought they were slow, but at least they were actually making moves, killing subs, cubs and females, and challenging the rivals. They were also dealing with much stronger duos.

3 Kambulas are few months over 5, one is 4.5 , they are nowhere near 6.

On average thats the age when coalitions start to become territorial, some sooner, some later.

yea, its not even a opinion thing at this point. Just factual from what they've showed for now.

turning 6 this year anyways.
the coalitions mentioned by Mapokser were at most 5. In the year they would probably turn 6, they were already pride males

wonder is this is probably a better fit in either the Birmingham Pride or in the Timbavati Thread.

my understanding is this tracks the lineage of the BBoys (Gowrie). But maybe I am wrong....maybe mods can chime in.

But I do know some call these Boys also "BirminghAM Coalition (im not a fan of that casue it just causes confusion)

You're right bro, I just realized now that they're not the lineage of the coalition.
Maybe Timbati Thread is better for these guys. Birmingham pride thread maybe is not as good because they're no longer part of them.
