There is a world somewhere between reality and fiction. Although ignored by many, it is very real and so are those living in it. This forum is about the natural world. Here, wild animals will be heard and respected. The forum offers a glimpse into an unknown world as well as a room with a view on the present and the future. Anyone able to speak on behalf of those living in the emerald forest and the deep blue sea is invited to join.

It doesn't look like his mane is growing back on the top. Yet.

I think DM is one of those lions which prime years pass quickly and age is starting to caught with him, regardless if he is now nomad or not.

Regardless of his foot injury thru years , otherwise he was/is healthy, he is "only" 9 - 9.5 yrs old, but on him is visiable that age is starting to take its tool.

All lions dont age the same, for example Nhenha is around 11-11.5  yrs old atm, and still doesnt show signs of aging, while on his brother Tinyo was different, altrough age diff between them is prob only few months, if even so.

Also genetics, Old Avoca/Giraffes where also relatively short in longevity, their deterioation already started in 2018, and almost all of them died before age of 10, except DM's father Brutus and last old Avoca/Giraffe, who also behave like DM towards the end, just following prides for food in nomadic manner.

So i dont think DM will raise to be dominant male again, he will prob live out his life in this manner, following Talamatis or other prides for food.

His kids are out there doing well though.  He kept them safe for years.
Dark Mane has sized up his situation in his travels lately and it took a lot of life out of him.
He just can't fight as well due to his injury.
Lions are realists and they know their place.
If a need for his services arises like it did many years ago, he would try his best again I think.
But as you say, for now he's just enjoying the company of a pride and the help they provide him.

I will also add that DM may have difficulties in a one to one fight due to his injury. However, it is possible that with the help of another lion, DM may still give a good fight.

You're right, the imbali male already separated few of the lionesses.
I was thinking maybe any or all of his sons could join him to chase out single males.

Even those may just run him off if they feel they don't need him and can just take over his territory.
They would also have to be sons from a different pride. Or they would just get wanderlust and leave or be shunned by the pride.
