Black Piranha (Serrasalmus rhombeus) 32 cm long, this specimen is from the Venezuelan Llanos, it is one of the less common piranhas in the Aquarium world because this variant can not be exported from Venezuela like they do in other countries. They grow up to 45 cm long and weight up to 3 kilograms. Locals call them Caribe Ojos Rojos (Red Eye Caribe) or Caribe Negro (Black Caribe) People call piranhas Caribes in Venezuela. It is one of the most aggresive piranhas in captivity but they normally dont attack people in the wild.
There are different variants in different rivers in Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Guyana, Ecuador and Peru. Black piranhas are one of the bigger species with the largest specimens reaching 50 centimeters long (20 inches) and 4 kilograms (8,8 pounds). Hobbiest around the world love them, they look great in Public Aquariums they are exported from Peru in Huge sizes 45 cm (18 inches) long. They live up to 20 years and more in captivity.
