This is Xando, a young (about 3 years old), gorgeous, cross-eyed Jaguar that still hangs out all the time with his brother, Bororo. They are off springs of the legendary Ruth, which is the most important (Jaguar) matriarch in the Meeting of the Waters State Park, Northern Pantanal.

Hunter is the largest female Jaguar around here. She’s the granddaughter of the legendary Ruth, which is the most important (Jaguar) matriarch in the Meeting of the Waters State Park, Northern Pantanal.

After losing her first and only cub (when he was nearly independent), this year she had cubs again. Good luck Hunter!

The horrible fires that ravaged the Southern Pantanal

"The Pantanal continues to suffer from an incredibly strong drought! The month of October almost had no rains and the firse returned with violence caused by strong winds and record temperatures of over 45 Degrees! Images of the corixo mata-dog, Miranda River and BR-262 that connects corumba' to campo grande. The Highway was closed because of the Fire. 8479 outbreaks in the pantanal this year, more than 300% increase compared to last year. Over 50 miles of fire! And the flames spread with the wind and burn the green vegetation over ps flooded....the roots...population suffering from toxic smoke, with loss of communication because fiber was burned, posts and transmission networks affected and bridges of committed wood. Over 50 acres burned. There are 29 brigadistas of the previous fire of ibama, more than 30 firefighers of MS, MT Lent a plane to launch water. In two days poured more than 110 thousand liters of water in the burning vegetation!, firefighters of df also provided a plane prepared to fight forest fires, ibama sent helicopter with basket to launch water, ms left pm helicopter for transport of Troops. The most absurd of all this: Mato Grosso do sul has more than 60% of the Brazilian Pantanal, has Cerrado and Atlantic Forest and here in the state does not have a plane or helicopter prepared to put out the forest fires.

Marley has always hunted primarily in the water, but lately that’s pretty much all he does. You see, in July (2019) Marley got into a nasty fight and walked away with a broken paw. He has been limping ever since. Thus, in order not to apply pressure on his damage paw, he needs to catch his prey while swimming.

Remembering Fantasma ( Ghost in Portuguese ). He was a very large old male Jaguar that used to dominate the Refúgio Ecológico Caiman's reserve.

According to the Onçafari's biologists and researchers he was last seen in in the beginning of October 2013 probably overthrown by Xavier (another male Pantanal Jaguar that I will talk about later). Fantasma was a very relaxed Jaguar and wasn't pushed around by the Onçafari's vehicles.

''Fantasma was given this name by the Jaguar habituation team because he is hardly ever seen, but he is everywhere. He moves through the grasslands and thickets like a ghost. He leaves us clues that he was there. Gigantic tracks embedded in the earth, remains of carcasses feasted on in the undergrowth and most decisively he appears in camera traps''. -Onçafari Rangers

there's a Video by Onçafari with the rangers talking about Fantasma's disappearance and Xavier making it into Fantasma's territory and I will translate it into the english for you guys and talk about it later on.

FANTASMA VS XAVIER

In this video the creator of the Onçafari Project Mario Haberfeld interviews the Project's coordinator Lilian Rampim about Fantasma and Xavier posted in early 2015. (I am gonna summarize it).

About Fantasma
- Fantasma is a very old male Jag and he was the first Male Jag to inhabit the Refúgio Ecológico Caiman Reserve when it was created and we had followed his steps many times. his personality is that of a very confident male Jag that was comfortable with the ranger's presence, we once spotted him sleeping next to the car maybe due to him being a dominant male he felt really confident himself. He was spotted in all camera traps and he used to patrol the whole reserve by himself. we were fortunate enough to see him hunting down and eating a Tapir all by himself and he ate it all in three nights without minding the ranger's presence. But in October 2013 was the last time we saw him around the reserve.

About Xavier
- As a huge coincidence in early October 2013 we had our last sightings of Fantasma and in mid October 2013 we spotted a new male jaguar in the reserve and we nicknamed him Xavier. Since then Xavier was regularly spotted patrolling every place Fantasma used to and also he was often seen mating with the females from the reserve, after a while he is now really confident with us like Fantasma was, we believe that this behavior of such confidence is a characteristic of dominant males Jaguars, and we never saw Fantasma ever again. So we assume that Xavier as a younger male stronger, more robust and stockier he might have either expelled Fantasma from the area or Fantasma left to rule a smaller area with less competition or Fantasma died in a fight with Xavier or he passed away due to old age and our hopes of spotting Fantasma alive is starting to shrink unfortunately.

But its a natural thing given the fact the datas tell us that a wild Jag can live around 14 years and we thought Fantasma was 12/13 years old so we were all sad about his absence but now it seems that Xavier will definitely be the father of the next generation of wild jags here at Refúgio Ecológico Caiman.

Despite being 12/13 years old he still looked really impressive. I'd like to know what really happened to him in details during his ''possible'' battle against Xavier. Too bad the cameras trap didn't spot anything in regards to it so we will never know. What a magnificent male he was.

An amazing sighting of Xavier at night in the Pantanal wilderness.
One of his first appearances in the area.

Mario Haberfeld the creator of onçafari project just spotted a special visit and it happens to be Xavier male feeding on a Cow carcass and he says that it's been about 30 to 40 minutes since we've spotted him for the very first time and oddly enough Esperança ( a famous female jaguar in the reserve ) was seen around there earlier that night but she left eventually and we were trying to figure out why because Esperança is one of the most habituated jaguars we got in the reserve and after a few minutes Xavier showed up unexpectedly and started feeding on the carcass right next to us and then we found out why Esperança left its cause she's got three cubs and having a new male in the area could be dangerous to the cubs so she didn't risk continue eating the carcass.

-It was a very emotional scene we had guests with us here and one more time we're proving the onçafari project is really working and its proving that the jaguars are worth much more alive than dead through ecotourism.

So I'd assume that Esperança's cubs were probably Fantasma's offsprings.
