Yes, because they where practically nomads, mating and spending some time with few prides but nothing serious.

All 6 and later 5 Matimbas together where unchallenged, and thats the reason they split, if they stayed together neither Bboys and Avoca/Giraffe males wouldn't be able to beat them.

In my opinion all 5 Matimbas together are the strongest coalition in this era, yes, even stronger then Mapogos.

Avoca/Giraffe were coalition of 8 if I am remember correctly and so should be able to take on Matimbas even if they still would have been coalition of 5.

Im not an expert of Giraffe/Avoca males, but where they ever a truly coalition of 8? Where they even seen 8 together when nomadic? As i know they split into 5 and 3 when they started to conquer.

When they were pushing on Matimbas they were still together and ganged on single Matimba as group 6 or 7.

Does anyone know who was the coalition Ginger fought against by himself ?
there was a moment when Ginger appeared wounded in londolozi he fought off against a few males to protect the area, back then there was rumors he fought birminghams others say it was majingilane ( but I think it was the same time the majingilanes chased off HB into the bushes ) but nobody knows who was involved only roars were heard I only know that in order to wound a lion the size of Ginger that way it had to be 2 or more but he managed to survive though, I think it will remain mistery just like mapogo rasta misterious night ( despite some people say he was poached but who knows ).

these are the things that triggers me the most about lions coalitions ( other wild animals too ), these ''clashes'' occurs and the ones that remains misteries that even local rangers can't explain just freak us all out of endless curiosity, we'll never know.

Most likely Majingilanes, i think only 2 Majingilanes chased HB at that time.

I suppose the sweet spot for big coalitions is 4. Any more and splits seem to become inevitable.

Split allows coalition to cover way bigger arena so I do not think it is bad move in general.
