RE: The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) - parvez - 01-10-2018 Another insight as to why they maintain high genetic diversity despite genetic bottleneck is due to the presence of javan and sumatran rhinos in their historical habitat although mostly in the northeast. They must have mated with these rhino subspecies and must have developed high genetic diversity IMO, *This image is copyright of its original author

RE: The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) - brotherbear - 01-12-2018 https://rhinos.org/species/sumatran-rhino/ Fewer than 100 Sumatran rhinos survive in very small and highly fragmented populations. The Sumatran rhino is the most endangered of all rhinoceros species due to its rapid rate of decline. Because of poaching, numbers have decreased more than 70% over the last 20 years, with the only viable population now in Indonesia. The species was declared extinct in the wild in Malaysia in 2015. Sumatran rhinos exist only in protected areas where they are physically guarded by Rhino Protection Units. Continued protection, combined with consolidating small, fragmented populations into larger ones, and intensifying captive breeding efforts, are the best hope for the species’ survival RE: The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) - parvez - 01-12-2018 @ RE: The Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) - parvez - 01-14-2018 More pictures, *This image is copyright of its original author Comparison to humans, *This image is copyright of its original author
