''We're currently work with a number of 15 to 20 cameras installed in pre-defined stations. These cameras are our eyes in the field, every day, all day, for the last 3 years. They help us to raise the amount of Maned wolves in the region, their daily activity pattern, injured animals, health problems like scabies... And they bring us good information as well as the presence of the puppies (cubs)!

We have accumulated this month almost 20 thousand day traps, resulting in almost 478 thousand hours of monitoring. This produced 8,150 images of wild mammals and specifically of maned wolves, there were more than 700 records in 26 different stations in 36 months in an area of about 1200 km2.

There were 26 wolves identified by their natural marks (mask, mane, ''black socks'' and tail size). All of them have been accompanied by cameras in this period.''

Unprecedented sightings of maned wolves in Amazon herald a changing landscape

  • The maned wolf has been spotted 22 times in the Amazon over the past 25 years, 10 of those times in areas where it had never been seen before.
  • Scientists posit that South America’s largest canine is spreading north as human-driven deforestation and climate change eat away at the fringes of the Amazon, turning the rainforest into the dry shrubland that the maned wolf is accustomed to.
  • In its traditional range across the Cerrado savanna, the maned wolf is being squeezed into increasingly fragmented spaces and pushed into human areas.
  • This puts it at risk of being hit by vehicles, catching disease from domestic pets, and being killed by farmers.

@Sully

Thats a very valuable information, I wasn't expecting the maned wolves get to the point of venturing into the Amazon but unfortunately humans every day can surprise us negatively as they are the biggest threat for maned wolves so its understandable for them to move into the Amazon.

Thanks for sharing.

Today we will tell you a little bit about Pimenta (pepper) female maned wolf.

''This grouchy 6-year-old female was captured in July 2019. When we saw her up close, we noticed that she was very weak and her coat was thin, with many flaws, characteristic of scabies. She was sedated and examined and received a monitoring collar. With collected material we did several examinations and concluded the suspicion of infestation by mites that cause scabies. Even with the fragile health Pimenta was with puppies/cubs and breastfeeding, with one of the breasts indicating a mastitis.

Her treatment for scabies was quickly initiated. After three months she was recaptured. We had to share the excitement with the sadness. She was fully recovered from the scabies; becoming a beautiful and healthy wolf again. However, her breasts no longer had milk, confirming what her behavior indicated by the collar data had already shown: she had lost the puppies. The litter is always very fragile and the scab may have contributed to the loss, because the transmission of the mites occurs mainly by direct contact.

Her life is not easy. Pimenta lost her mate, the male maned wolf Rivo in November 2019. And along with her daughter Lupe they started to take care of the 60 km2 where they live. In 2/6 of this year we recaptured her and once again we found that she was pregnant. But now she is without scabies, full of life, health and ... with puppies! She got a new boyfriend and soon made up for last year's losses. We have been following her steps and soon we will show the two little wolves of 6 months.

And the best! All these wolves were welcomed by the Leite Ribeiro family from Belo Monte Farm in Mococa (SP) who became their eternal guardians! Gratitude dear friends of the Lobos do Pardo!''

@Balam

Great find, I knew there were still maned wolves around those areas.
